Like many of the young men born and raised in Harlem, Gist had the dream of becoming a sports star. Realizing what was thought to be his calling at a young age, he excelled greatly at the game of basketball. With the constant struggle of not succumbing to the everyday temptations of the ghetto, Gist managed to land an opportunity to attend Catholic School for free to play basketball. While becoming an instant star and high school all American, Gist discovered a second talent he possessed: the ability to express his thoughts and emotions in rhyming words.
Growing up in the projects within the inner-city ghetto, Gist was forced to witness and experience vast tragedies and life changing incidents. He has seen friends die, go to jail, and even fall to drug addictions. Growing up poor did not leave many choices for children of the ghetto, but as Gist will tell you, "ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE."
A challenging upbringing poses as an asset to the gift given to Tom Gist in the form of rap. "TOM GIST IS THE DIFFERENCE." Although he began his career as a battle rapper named "Arrogance" (well known on the streets of Harlem), he realized sooner than later that this was a road leading to nowhere. Now recognized by his government name, Gist has evolved into an extraordinary songwriter. He possesses a talent that cuts into the true essence of Hip Hop. Gist has the power to write songs that command a visualization of every verse as he flows.
After achieving no success at obtaining a major label deal, Gist, along with his childhood friend Robert Early, formed Early Lite Entertainment. Under their own imprint they released a total of five Independent Mixtapes/Albums. With the release of their third Independent Mixtape/Album entitled "Chapter II: Thinking Out Loud" they caught the attention of Harlem's Hero and Diplomat Records CEO Cam'Ron. With about a year and a half going by and after the releasing of "Chapter III: Get The Gist," his fourth Independent release, Cam'Ron finally saw fit to welcome Tom Gist into the Diplomat Family. That welcoming was heralded by the Independent Mixtape/Album "Initiation," Gist's fifth release to date. It is soon to be followed by the latest Chapter, "Chapter IV: Still Thinking."
Although negotiations are still being worked out, Diplomats are Harlem, Harlem is Home, and Home is where Gist wants to be.
