About Me

Kayo Chingonyi writes poetry, fiction and the occasional song. He has been writing poetry for eight years and performing his poems for five of those eight in venues as diverse as Buckingham Palace, Shakespeare’s Globe, Tate Modern, The Poetry Café, Stratford Circus and Battersea Arts Centre.He is a third year undergraduate in English Literature at The University of Sheffield. During term time he runs a poetry night called ‘Word Life’ with the aim of showcasing the most talented poets in and around the steel city. His work has been published in ‘The Write Stuff’ (an anthology for young writers) and more recently in the University of Sheffield’s creative writing journal: www.route57.group.shef.ac.uk. Influences: As a writer of poems and such: Ursula Rucker, Gil Scott-Heron, Joelle Taylor, Dorothea Smartt, Breis, Zena Edwards, Kat Francois, Charlie Dark, Jacob S.L.R, Rodger Robinson (said 'imagery is like seasoning'... very true), Liz Casdan and the Lit 219 Massive (Seamus, you send me back to the drawing board often), Jolyon Roberts (had me pegged as a future writer back in primary school).As an emcee: Jehst (the imagery), Saul Williams (nuff said), Ty (One verse sticks in my mind: 'some stay vexed coz I don't mess about with my words or emulate gunplay...'), Klashnekoff (every single line is heartfelt, not afraid to say he cries), Black Thought (not afraid to write a love song), Mystic (her album broke my heart).
Sounds Like: The depth of my voice was inherited from my father. So if I sound like anyone it's him...
