About Me

DJ JEDI is the latest addition to the world reknowned Rootdown Soundsystem. He is also currently the resident turntablist for the recently reunited, Grammy Award-winning hip hop pioneers, DIGABLE PLANETS. as a result of touring with the DP's, he's had the privilege of headlining with them at virtually every major music festival in the world, including (but not limited to) COACHELLA, LOLLAPOLOOZA, BUMBERSHOOT in Seattle, and the SONAR FESTIVAL in Barcelona, Spain. Along the way, he's had the priviledge of sharing stages with the likes of superstars such as The Breakestra, Crown City Rockers, DJ Shadow, King Britt, Lyrics Born, The Procussions, Z-Trip, Weezer, Erykah Badu, Madonna, and countless others.
Prior to touring with Digable Planets, Jedi was the in-house selector for the Tony Award-winning RUSSELL SIMMONS' DEF POETRY JAM ON TOUR from 2003-2004, which allowed him to perform in such marquee venues as the World Famous APOLLO THEATRE in Harlem, N.Y. and THE SYDNEY FESTIVAL in Australia.
He holds down a myriad of residencies in the L.A. area, including Downbeat 720, an open mic venue for high school kids, which he co-hosts with actor/poet Joe Hernandez-Kolski. In July of 2006, Joe and Jedi won EMMYS for their work on Downbeat Showdown, the television spin-off of Downbeat 720.
His 70 minute, genre-busting musical opus, "Eclectic Sessions", as well as his love letter to his favorite hip hop collective the DP's, entitled "Blowout Breaks", are currently available at FAT BEATS, WORKMEN'S OUTLET, 33THIRD.COM, TURNTABLELAB.COM, and anywhere quality cds and mixtapes are sold.
While Jedi's influences may stem primarily from hip hop culture, he also carries a deeply rooted appreciation for the classic soul, funk, jazz, rock, dance, and pop music that hip hop so heavily draws from. He believes strongly in the power of music to bring people of different cultures and backgrounds together in ways that they otherwise wouldn't, and is never too proud to whore out his services for weddings, bar mitzvahs, industry showcases, and birthday parties.

DJ Shadow, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Z-Trip, Cut Chemist, Blackalicious, The Native Tongues, Portishead, Common (I could probably do a 200 page thesis on the science you were droppin’ on that "Resurrection" LP!), Little Brother, The Beat Junkies, Jurassic 5, M.F. Doom, J-Dilla (you left us too soon), Madlib, ?uestlove (the best kept secret in deejaying!) & the Roots, Rich Medina (The greatest night of mixing I’ve ever seen in my life was you doin a set @ Juju one summer night in 2000!) 1580 KDAY ’88-’91, Yo MTV Raps 91-93, West Coast Hip hop ’93-’95, Mo Wax Records ’95-’97, Rawkus Records ’97-’2000, N.W.A., KRS One, ICE CUBE (the greatest rapper alive back in ’91!) Public Enemy, Gangstarr (pretty much anything DJ Premier so much as sneezed on between ’87 & 2000!), Hamilton High Class of ’94-’97, Digable Planets (then AND now...), James Brown, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Sly & The Family Stone, Michael Jackson, Stanley Clark, Freddie Hubbard, The Crusaders, CTI Records, Blue Note Records, Stax Records, Isaac Hayes (R.I.P. Chef, *Sniff*), Prince up to the O(+ album, Queen, Blondie, Art Of Noise, Nirvana, Fiona Apple, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Wonder Showzen, The Boondocks, early Spike Lee, Quinton Tarantino movies, Kevin Smith movies (Jersey Girl doesn’t count!), High Fidelity (for obvious reasons), Pootie Tang, American Pimp, the lives and careers of Stan Lathan, Quincy Jones, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby, Russell Simmons, Oprah, Barack Obama, Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill, Dave Chappelle, and basically anyone that’s been able to effectively persevere and navigate through the perils and pitfalls of the industry while maintaining some semblence of a soul; Comic Books, Culver City, California, and every DJ, rapper, artist, or musician I’ve ever worked with.
Sounds Like: Someone trying to rock a party like J.Rocc, scratch like QBert, and move you like Shadow. You be the judge.

Type of Label: Indie
