Angelia Ray Biography
Known for her rich vocals, perfect harmonies, and overall powerhouse sound, Angelia Ray is set to follow in the footsteps of the few true timeless artists. Angelia hopes to one day carry the torch and share her gift of song over to the world’s audience. Born to James and Myrtle Ray on November 6, 1982, and a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Angelia is the oldest of four siblings.
Like many artists, Angelia’s musical experience is deeply rooted in the Church. At age three, she joined the youth choir and as time went on her talent and ear for music was nurtured. She began to sing solos at age of 7; her very first, a rendition of “His Eye is on the Sparrow” that brought the congregation to tears. She was said to have expressed such maturity, power, and conviction even at that young age. From that moment on many knew she possessed a rare gift, beyond song and they described her as “the little girl with the big voice”.
As Angelia grew in age, so did her ability. She continued to develop her voice through church, school, and throughout the Winston-Salem Triad community. Around age ten, she developed admiration for Whitney Houston, and soon learned many of her popular tunes. Angelia won acclaim through talent shows at Atkins Middle School, as she would sing dynamically parallel renditions of Whitney Houston’s classics, “I Will Always Love You”, “I Have Nothing”, and “Run to You”. It became routine for her to bring an audience to their feet… it still is.
She continued being active in chorus, show choir, gospel choir, and honors ensembles throughout her high school career. Her introduction to theater landed her the role of the Fairy Godmother in a staged production of Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Ironically, Whitney Houston played this role in the film, and Angelia met all expectations as she performed Impossible and There is Music in You. Cinderella was her acting debut, but was the first of many as she has also starred in Langston Hughes' Black Nativity.
After high school, Angelia pursued higher education at NC A&T State University, in Greensboro, NC, earning a BA of Arts & sciences in Music Vocal Performance. She participated in the University Choir as well as the University Jazz Ensemble. For three years Angelia performed with Couture Productions, a fashion troupe that polished her natural dance ability, in hip hop, modern, liturgical, and jazz. One of her greatest accomplishments thus far includes being crowned Miss Black and Gold 2003 for the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. She has also performed in many showcases throughout NC, as well as national anthem spots for the NBA Charlotte Bobcats and WNBA Charlotte Sting.
In 2006, Angelia began pursuing her musical aspirations on a full-time basis, and routinely travels between New York and Atlanta to perform and audition. She has been offered independent label deals, but is not under any contractual obligations. Angelia currently resides in Charlotte, NC, where she is polishing her demo and website. With a smile and personality that will light the sky, and a voice that can be heard above the rest, Angelia firmly believes that greatness comes from determination that never dies. “I want to be remembered as someone that broke boundaries with my music as well as maintained longevity by creating great music for all people.”
