About Me
I am a Music Educator, Low Brass Specialist, Band Director, Choir Director, Musician, Arranger, and Composer. I am the leader of my own group, THE JOHN HENRY ENSEMBLE (music for all occasions, any size group). I play the piano, organ, keyboard, trombone, bass trombone, and other low brass instruments. I also give private lessons. I am currently pursuing a doctorate degree in Music Education.I started playing piano at age 5, and later the organ (pipe and B-3). I have been playing in Church since age 12, starting at St. Matthew UMC (E. 86th & Wade Park.) I have been playing the trombone since 5th grade. Upon graduating from college, I played with trombone with many musicians in Cleveland including Joe DeJarnette and Eddie Baccus, Sr. at the Elk's Lodge on E. 55th St., Lee Jordan at the Sixth St. Down Under, and the late Billy Haddon at Miss Dee Dee's on Euclid Avenue, and with the Ernie Krivda Fat Tuesday Big Band at Mr.s Z's.As I started my career as a college professor in Houston, TX and later to Greensboro, NC I have played with many fine musicians on both trombone, bass trombone, piano, organ, and keyboard, written, arranged, and recorded music for various ensembles. Most notable are the UNCG Jazz Ensemble (Live with Dewey Redman), the Community Music Center (Scott Joplin Chamber Orchestra), the Conrad Johnson Big Blue Sound, La Big Band, Grady Gaines and the Texas Upsetters, and the Calvin Owens Blues Orchestra "http://www.calvinowens.com"
