Akasha

a drum & belly dance troupe

About Me

We Are
Akasha

Akasha has been compared to a rampaging tribe of Amazons, a wandering band of priestesses, and an eclectic caravan of gypsies. But, we say Akasha is a troupe of women, each different than the next, united in the effort to pour themselves out to other women through the rhythm of the drum, the spirit of dance, and the magic of song. Akasha calls out to ALL women, "Seek and discover the power within yourselves and each other ...and KNOW that you ARE beautiful."...Each member of Akasha is different than the others...in spirituality, personality, heritage, racial background, and dancing/drumming styles...we marvel at eachother's uniqueness and celebrate our shared goal: to build up eachother and strengthen other women.

Influences: Cowries have been a favorite element of female adornment for thousands of years and are a great symbol of affluence and power. The cowrie shell resembles the vulva of a woman, and for this reason, it has been embraced by many women today as a fitting symbol for their process to reclaim the sacred in their own bodies and in their sexuality. With the cowrie being such an ancient symbol for creation, birth and re-birth and since it is worn by many women as a statement that they take the manifestation of their own spirituality seriously, no wonder the ladies from Akasha are draped in them.

Looks Like: Akasha is a fusion belly dance troupe with influences as diverse as each of its members...we aren’t just tribal...or tribal fusion...or folkloric...OR cabaret. we are a tribe of gorgeous-rampaging Amazons, a sacred sect of roaming priestesses, a circle of stunning sirens...
we’re a bunch of knockouts,
