running on bravado

About Me

My name is Koren. It's pronounced like Lauren, except for the K at the beginning.
Welcome to my personal slice of the internet. Not to be demanding or anything, but if you REALLY, SERIOUSLY want to be my internet friend, send me a message along with your friend request. It doesn't have to be great literature, just a sentence or two.
Here are some helpful examples:
"It's me, Holden Caulfield, your best friend from that phony high school. I'm out of the mental hospital and wanted to say hi."
"h-h-hi. it's Milton Waddams. we worked together at Initech...yeah..i was wondering..that day of the office fire...did you happen to notice if anyone picked up my stepler?"
"Michael Alig here. I'd like to have you DJ at the new club night I'm starting as soon as I'm out on parole, name your fee."
BANDS - Terribly sorry, but I don't accept friend requests from bands. I am interested in hearing your music, though and if you take the time to send me a message I will take the time to check out your profile. Here's an example just for you - "Hello there! We have checked out your playlists as well as your stated musical interests and have some commonalities in sound and/or style to some of the music you play/like. Please visit our profile to listen to the several well-produced tracks we have available. If you like them enough to want to play them in a club setting (you being a DJ and all), we will send you a copy of the CD and/or tracks. We promise we won't annoy you with daily bulletins abut nothing, bullsh!t spam messages or event invitations for things that are ten hours away."
And now, a little more about me
I've been DJing for about ten years now, started in college radio in 1996 (WZLY, WZBC) and then made the switch to club nights in 2000 (Purgatory, Ceremony, System @ Manray, VI Fetish/Sin-O-Matic, GrrlRush, Framework Tuesdays) as well as special events (Music for a Robot Uprising, the Vagina Fair, lesbian/bi-curious dance parties).
I started Shift, a weekly Wednesday night offering a mix of electro/indie-rock /pop/techno/whatever. Loved it. Unfortunately, it is currently homeless. If you know of a new venue, let me know. In the meantime, check out the Shift MySpace page , which has a sampling of tracks I enjoy.

My Interests

DJing, awesome music including classic and indie rock, industrial and electro, and wierdo "hybrids" (i.e. electropunk, technopop, artrock, electroclash), staying up all night shooting the breeze, making new friends, going to parties where I only know the host, stand-up comedy, drinking and dancing, reading all sorts of books/novels/short stories, travel, making internet friends, writing things, wandering around cities and people-watching, driving (road trips!), being evil, getting into politics, critical analysis of the New Testament, comparative religion/mythology, devil worship and weird internet crap
I love meeting new cool people, and by cool people I mean people who are intelligent, with a sense of humor and/or wit, who are open to new people and experiences, positive energy, and possess the ability to have fun.

I'd like to meet:

People that need a DJ. Preferably ones that will pay me. For booking, email me at: [email protected]

It's ok if you aren't offering a paying DJ gig, I'd like to meet you if you are creative, talented, intelligent, open-minded, responsible and fun. Also, making me laugh is good.

I also want to meet the girl and her bro that made this video to a remix of Mindless Self Indulgence's "Straight to Video" that Infrastructure and I did. Fantastic!

I definitely want to meet people of all races, colors, sexual persuasions, nationalities, genders, heights, weights, levels of education, musical preferences and religious backgrounds. I don't want to date you, or check out your hot webcam action - I like my intercourse with people on the internet to be of the intellectual variety, thanks.

Multi-colored hair, piercings and tattoos not mandatory, but definitely plusses. Open mind and sense of humor are essential. (Koren is an equal opportunity internet friend)

Music:

Check out the Shift profile for an MP3 player of my favorite tracks!

I also have an account on Last.fm , which is a totally awesome site. Check it out!

Movies:

Any other Netflix junkies out there? Send me an invite at punketta [at] punketta [dot] com and you'll be privy to the 223 movies in my queue and see what I thought of the 447 movies I've rated.
A quick rundown of my personal favorites: Scarface, Best In SHow, Ghostbusters, American Psycho, Princess Bride, Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner, Traffic, Goodfellas, Young Frankenstien, Corky Romano, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Cecil B. Demented, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Gingersnaps, Detroit Rock City, D.E.B.S., Suicide Club, Audition, The Golden Child, Battle Royale, Fight Club, True Romance, Brain Candy, Blazing Saddles, This is Spinal Tap, The Addams Family movies, Falling Down, Boondock Saints, and the Indiana Jones, Die Hard, Beverly Hills Cop, Lethal Weapon series
I mostly seem to enjoy redonkulous comedies, explodey action, sicko Japanese horror, girl-on-girl action, and combinations thereof.

Television:

I realize it seems like I watch a lot of TV - I assure you I DO have a life.I have RCN Digital Video Recorder, which is like TiVo. I record stuff to watch whenever, and can fast forward through commercials. whoo hoo!
I do enjoy cartoons, including The Boondocks, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Family Guy, certain seasons/episodes of South Park. Beavis & Butthead (with music videos included, please). I also love Sifl & Olly. Yeah, they're sock puppets but I didn't want to make a separate catgory for them.
CSI (only the Las Vegas one, though), the O.C., House M.D., Freaks and Geeks, Bones, NCIS, the first couple seasons of That 70's Show, Mythbusters, Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe.
I have to say I love HBO and Showtime - my favorite new show is Dexter. Serial killer vigilante = awesome. I dig The Sopranos, Rome, Dead Like Me, the L-Word, Entourage and Weeds.

Books:

I'm open to reading of any sort, and try to make time every day. If you have any book recommendations, please share!
Some I have enjoyed include: House of Leaves, The Great Improvisation, The Chronicles of Narnia, the Harry Potter books, Them, Fast Food Nation, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Running With Scissors. Tales of Ordinary Madness, The DaVinci Code, Last Temptation of Christ, The Satanic Bible.
On a potentially more contriversial note - I consider the Bible to be one of the greatest works of fiction ever.

Heroes:

Sherlock Holmes, Ali G., Oscar Wilde, Benjamin Franklin, Galileo, Leonardo DaVinci, Ann Hutchinson, Thomas Jefferson, F.D.R., Margaret Thatcher, Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, Lucifer, William Shakespeare, my parents, Dorothy Parker, Mel Brooks, Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce.
