The next release for Cynic will be the 'Sundance E.P.' from Dedication. This is the first E.P. from the Japanese group that delivered 'Dedicated' which featured on the Lifeforce C.D. 'Do You Think You Know Enough About The U.K. Underground without Knowing Foolish Felix' which was released on Japanese label Avex last year.
This E.P features three hot tracks in a tribute to the Sundance Kid, notoriously the fastest draw and keenest shot of the famous Wild Bunch.
The A side 'The Sundance Kid', comes complete with galloping horses, rattlesnakes and gunshots; this track is the Wild West meets the mirror ball.
The first track on the B Side 'Westbound 23’, is named after the first train robbery that the Sundance kid committed in his early years before he joined the Wild Bunch. Although this robbery was foiled, he was mistakenly let go by the local sheriff, and made a very lucky escape from a certain hanging.
'The Blaze Of Glory' that finishes the E.P. is a reference to the well documented last stand where Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid were surrounded by the Bolivian army, and decided rather than meekly surrendering they would charge to certain death both guns blazing.
This E.P. is the collaboration of Felix Dickinson, Tsuyoshi of Cro- Magna fame, and Keita Y Mikey, Botch and Jonas. These Japanese musicians are all linked through a love of surfing. Felix hooked up with them while touring Japan a couple of years ago when he recorded Dedicated with them while they taught him to surf. These three tracks were recorded in 2006 when Felix was out there again promoting the Lifeforce album.
There is a cynic buried deep within most of us. While the majority of the dance music community become jaded and lay down their tools, or started leaping on various commercial bandwagons, some decide to stop bitching and use their cynicism to positive ends and do things their own way. And this is precisely what has happened with Cynic Records.
Cynic Records was started by 'Foolish' Felix Dickinson in 2004 as an outlet for music where he didnt have to conform to some other labels perception of what was 'hot'. It started as a home for his collaborations with Kyle Chandler as 'Foolish and Sly', and Jaime Read as L.H.A.S. Inc.; but now releases more music from like minded producers and musicians looking for a no-nonsense label.
Over the last two years Cynic have released a steady flow of well produced, genuine, emotive-driven records - decent fodder that have pricked up well preened ears across the globe, from the UK and the rest of Europe through to America and Japan. Fans of the label include Daniel Wang, Harvey, the Idjut Boys, Laurent Garnier, Radio One's Rob Da Bank and the Unabombers, amongst many. The bottom line is this - the records Cynic release deserves to be heard.
