Mark Gwinnett, DJ, Producer, Lunacy Sound Division
Mark's first love of music was grounded by the awesome had to be there era of the Madchester music scene of The Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets, Happy Mondays etc.... For years during his teenage years Mark then followed the bands he loved catching so many live shows by everyone from Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine to The Wonderstuff, Ned's Atomic Dustbin and The Charlatans. Then came the Hip Hop, Mark began to get bang into everything from Onyx to Cypress Hill to Gangstarr. There was that one mad year in '92 that the Reading festival was privilidged to have Nirvana and Public Enemy headlining on consecutive days!. An amazing musical feast. This was all before house music really took hold of his mind around '94 with a first visit to a certain nightclub called Cream in Liverpool. Still in love with all of the musical influences of his formative years Mark really never looked back from that first visit to Cream and embarked on a wicked clubland journey incorporating the rave scene and early and jilted Prodigy tours which ultimately became responsible for Mark buying his first pair of 1210's in early '96. Then there was Derrick Carter! etceteraaa......boomp!........
Lunacy Sound Division was brought to life in 2004 when after many years on the dance floors of nightclubs from Cream to Goodbye Cruel World to Space, Mark began to produce his own material to pepper into his DJ mixes with the advent of the CDJ into the booth alongside the trusted 1210s. The production grew and developed from loops, beats and FX in a DJ mix into full blown tunes played in their own right in the mix. In 2005 the live concept of Lunacy Sound Division was brought to life with live performances accompanied by FX, keyboards and live percussion at Kanya and Eden in Ibiza and regular appearances at Lunacy Nights towards the end of 2005 which was a pre club event at Priory in Farringdon, London put on by Mark and the LSD boys, (Martin Ridgway and Colin McCann), to primarily showcase new material. This was pretty short lived however but in early 2006 Mark upped the anti on the production and it became slicker and much dirtier. The creative juices began to flow and the LSD sound as you find it today created. Lunacy Sound Division begun performing again and showcasing new material in live and DJ mixes layering FX into the mix with the trademark percussion most recently for Club Class' Futurism at River, Maidstone, Snapshot and in January 2007 Nice & Dirty again at River. Mark was also on the decks promoting the Lunacy vibe in DJ sets at Drop in Canterbury, New Mix, Snapshot, Summer Twist and How Clean is your House at River, Maidstone throughout 2006/7.
December 2006 saw Mark play at Undercurrent with Sam Ball and Sam Gregory at Bar 54 in Shoreditch, London alongside Luke Solomon and Serge Santiago. Mark was found regularly at Undercurrent throughout 2007 playing alongside some of the best names in underground house and techno in April 6th alongside Duncan K of Babyshake fame and 20:20 Vision's Silver City and then most recently on October 20th for the 1st Birthday warming up for Cagedbaby. May 6th 2007 saw Mark make his debut for Club Class' for the May Day Bank Holiday madness at River playing alongside Dave Robertson, Jim Rivers and Sebastien Leger. Mark has also been found spinning at Turnmills, The Key and The Egg in London over recent months.
Mark's production as Lunacy Sound Division caught the ear of globally respected DJ and producer Tony Thomas in September 2006 who promptly signed a 4 track EP to his Cubic Records imprint which was released on 21st December 2006 with an exclusive Beatport pre-release from November 30th 2006. The 'War Inside My Brain EP' has been doing the damage big time on the dancefloors ever since and has gained support from a wide spectrum of DJs from Trevor Rockliffe to Carlos Francisco to Nic Fanciulli and was featured in the mix by Tony Thomas for his guest spot on Carl Cox's Global Radio show on 16th December 2006. www.carlcox.com 'War inside my brain' was also featured in Carl Cox's July 2007 global chart at number 2 no less!!!
Very soon after two other LSD tracks were signed up by new label SP Recordings (affiliated with one of London's longest running and successful club nights Smartie Partie which currently resides monthly at London's premier club, the one and only Turnmills). Lunacy Sound Division's 'Sexual Freakquencies EP' was released on SP Recordings across all of the major digital download networks in December 2006 and directly from SP @ www.sprecordings.co.uk.with a great launch party at Turnmills on December 9th 2006 where 'Multiple Bassgasm' gave the famous soundsystem a nice little work out courteousy of label boss SP resident Carlos Francisco!
2007 also saw 'Get with you' featuring Natasha Drum finally released on Cubism. Typically an RnB singer, Natasha Drum is an awesome vocal talent most recently found providing backing vocals for Craig David, this was a big departure for her.... but it worked! Support well ahead of it's release has already come from Carl Cox and the track also opened Tony Thomas forthcoming Cubism Volume 1 mix album. 'Get with you' is released in the Autumn with a formidable remix package featuring Carlos Francisco, Red & Blue, Richard Belsom and Tony Thomas. LSD and Natasha have plans to work together soon on further projects.
Having established himself as one to watch on the production front in 2007 further releases are scheduled well into 2008 continuing with a two track release forthcoming on Evasive Recordings featuring tracks 'Crossed Wires' and 'Yellow Snow Conspiracy' with a Loopity Goof remix of Crossed Wires and a Lunacy Dub Mix of 'Yellow Snow'. Also set for release is the first of a series of collaborations with Sam Ball, a two track release featuring tracks 'Loca' and 'Defect' with 'Loca' already having been played on BBC Radio One and doing the damage on the dancefloor well ahead of the release on Mark, Tony Thomas and Rich Belsom's new Cubism label with remixes by Tom Budden, Richard Belsom, Darien J, Rob Cockerton & Jason Still and Intec's DJ Hal.
Also expect a slew of remixes out on various labels this year including reworks for DJ Hal, Tony Thomas, Rhythm Code, Richard Belsom and Rob Pearson to name a few.
In addition to all of this Mark will also be busy working on various exciting collaborations throughout 2007/8 in addition to running the Cubism label with Tony Thomas.
The Cubism label was founded by Tony Thomas, Mark Gwinnett and Richard Belsom in July 2007 with a view of showcasing the very best up and coming talent alongside the more established names within the house, techno and electro scene both on the label and at exclusive live events at different clubs within the UK. The label sits neatly alongside Tony's already well established and hugely successful Cubic imprint as it's sister label. The launch party on 7th July 2007 saw Tony Thomas rip it up at The Loft in Maidstone for one of the most memorable parties at the club last year. With Richard Belsom now moving on to persue other interests Tony and Mark will be unleashing some big records on Cubism this year and beyond with interest in the label gathering pace.
Cubism has already gained support from some of the worlds biggest DJ's including Carl Cox (on his Global radio show), James Zabiela, Nic Fanciulli, Paolo Mojo, Yousef, Pole Folder, Kissy Sell Out (2 plays on Radio One & LIVE show), The Loose Cannons (8 plays on Kiss FM!), Joe Ransom (Plays on Kiss FM), Trophy Twins (Plays on Radio One), Elite Force, MSTRKRFT, Dopamine, Micky Slim, Miley Dyson, Touche, James Talk, Jon Gurd, Rob Mooney, Kid Blue, Djuma Soundsystem, Chris Micali, Monoroom, Flash Brothers, Kasey Taylor, Anil Chawla, DJ Rebekah, Graham Gold, Stian Klo, Lee Mortimer, Crookers, Boy 8-bit, Bass Kleph, Affie Yusuf, Will Bailey etc etc etc..!

REVIEW FOR WAR INSIDE MY BRAIN
Cubic Digital (CUBIC DIGITAL 015), UK
IDJ Magazine (December 06)
"We have a second offering from Tony Thomas’ excellent Cubic label this month. This was a close for contender for ‘tune of the month’ this month, and when you get a chance to hear it, you’ll realize what a tough decision I had. This is a real lo slung dirty lazy groover, perfectly crafted and executed. Nuff said. 4/5"
"Lunacy Sound Division's "War Inside My Brain", "Bonzai Tree" and "Sick Puppy" went off when I played them in Ireland at the weekend!" Trevor Rockliffe
