About Me

How much time do we have? Life has to be lived forward, but can only be understood backward (Kierkegaard). "We don't see things as they are, we see things as we are" (Anais Nin). "Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then" (Katharine Hepburn). "Language is wine upon the lips" (Virginia Woolf). "He who would travel happily must travel light" (Saint-Exupery). "I'm never going to be famous. I don't do anything, not one single thing. I used to bite my nails, but I don't even do that any more" (Dorothy Parker). GUESS WHAT? All my pictures are current (since 2006)! Are yours? :)

My Interests

traveling, adventure--anything that gets my heart racing, reading, art and artists with unusual/unique perspectives, music of course and people who make it, people watching, cooking a great meal and sharing it with someone I care about, movies, napping, going to fun new restaurants, bad weather, grownup drinks walking/jogging and trying other exercise like biking, hiking, kayaking (okay, only did this once but it was a blast), flowers drinking coffee and reading the paper on a weekend morning, talking on the phone, lately wasting a lot of time on myspace :), visiting my family esp. my nieces and nephews and my silly sisters and cousins, and laughing! I'm serious!--make me laugh or laugh at my stupid jokes and I'm yours.

I'd like to meet:

Let's see . . . . Chris Isaak--no question. He and I are already friends and lovers in my dreams. Does that count? (Chris, please be my friend. Please.). I always loved John Cusack--even though his recent stuff is a little suspect. I've been interested in George Clooney for a while--could he be any sexier? And I would die a happy woman if I could have dinner/coffee/drinks/a roll in the hay with Johnny Depp.OK, seriously, just looking for new friends--like-minded people who share similar interests. If you're thoughtful and intelligent (you get extra points for good grammar or being any kind of artist or musician--I have a soft spot for creative types), even a little funny (likewise a sucker for anyone who can make me laugh), somewhat left-leaning, and have a love of culture (art/literature/theatre/music), then we are going to be friends.

Music:

good lord! lotsa stuff really--nearly all classical and old standards/jazz music, Foo Fighters, Green Day, U2, Nirvana, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Errol Garner, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Tony Bennett, Bill Withers, Beck, Radiohead, Stan Getz and the Gilbertos (bossa nova) Pretenders, Prince, AC/DC, Chris Isaak, REM, Seal, the Beatles, classic rock and 60s music, indie rock, John Fogerty/CCR Joe Jackson, Crowded House (and everything the Finns do/did--from Split Enz to Neil Finn's solo stuff), Squeeze, Nilsson, Coldplay, the Sundays, Rufus Wainwright, John Mayer, Mellencamp, Zeppelin, Motorhead, Metallica, ABBA, Nora Jones, Fiona Apple, Jann Arden, INXS (old and some new), Queen, Billy Squier, Marshall Crenshaw, Pearl Jam, Smithereens, Guadalcanal Diary, da Beastie Boys, and recently lots of good stuff that is new to me (thanks to some generous friends) like Supergrass, Eels Morcheeba, Portishead, Zero 7 (and other trip hop), Psapp, Imogen Heap, Snow Patrol, Levitation, Stereophonics, Muse, Feist, Kings of Convenience, The Bird and the Bee, etc. Are you seeing a pattern? Good--cuz there isn't one. Many guilty pleasures too--I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours.

Movies:

Funny ones, of course--e.g., classics like Spinal Tap, Best in Show, Office Space, Waiting for Guffman, Stripes, Mighty Wind, Rushmore and all the Wes Anderson films Raising Arizona and all the Coen Brothers films, old Steve Martin movies like The Jerk and The Man With Two Brains, Mel Brooks films, Flirting With Disaster, Caddyshack, Big Night, Almost Famous, Trading Places, Pee Wee, etc.--there are many. Old classics too--like Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, Streetcar Named Desire, Some Like It Hot, Gaslight, Citizen Kane, Waterloo Bridge, all the Hitchcock movies--esp. Rear Window, It's a Wonderful Life, etc. Pretty much everything Johnny Depp does (with a few exceptions--but damn he is cool). Lots of dramas and tearjerkers--Shawshank Redemption, Sophie's Choice, Sideways, Good Night and Good Luck, Ed Wood, Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, Garden State, Being John Malkovich, American Graffiti ,Bonnie and Clyde, old Woody Allen movies, The Graduate, etc. This year I loved Notes on a Scandal and The Departed. I'll stop whatever I'm doing for Coal Miner's Daughter--no matter when or where. Love indie movies. I also like movies and documentaries that make you think. I don't care much for chick flix. :-)

Television:

Seinfeld reruns, Arrested Development (RIP)-- I love Tobias Funke, Looney Tunes Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, Daily Show, The Office, currently getting a charge out of Robot Chicken and Moral Orel on Adult Swim, some sports (baseball, olympics, tennis, skating), some shows on Food Network, Simpsons, Family Guy, news, weather (yep--weather NERD), movies on HBO--don't watch a ton of network TV.

Books:

Bios of famous people and authors, GOOD original fiction, poetry, and drama that challenges me--Faulkner, Saramago, Tan, Atwood, Dubus, Eliot, Austen, Brontes, Graham Greene, Proulx, Saint-Exupery Coetzee, McEwan, etc. Essays and short stories and magazines like New Yorker, Harpers--yes, I'm liberal and proud of it. Also love reading cook books--fascinating! Oh, and health magazines. Funny stuff too--like David Sedaris, the Onion, etc. And I can't deny it--People, Glamour, Cosmo--everything in moderation ;)

Heroes:

I admire people who have artistic vision (all media) and who are committed to creating and expressing. People who are committed to making the world a better place. Brilliant strong women, like Dorothy Parker, Gertrude Stein, M.F.K. Fisher, Virginia Woolf, Anais Nin, Anne Sexton, Mother Teresa, my mom. And so on.
