Connolly's Story:It was the cold Irish summer of 1910, in a small town called Kilcolgan, County Galway in the western part of Ireleand when Michael Patrick Connolly was born into a family of seven. He was slight of frame and not too tall, and by the time he was twelve he had grown not too fondly accustomed to being the brunt of the jokes of all the bigger boys. One day he had had enough, and waited outside the school yard in ambush for the biggest and baddest of them all. He plastered that bully square between the eyes with the largest cow patty he could find. The repercussions were fierce. At the ripe old age of twelve he was sent away for his mishief to live with his uncle and work on the farm for a bit of discipline. But the uncle never kept up his part of the bargain to send the boy to school and used him as an enslaved work hand in the fields. At nineteen, , Michael Patrick saved up enough money to sneak away in the night to the ship-yards and arrange passage to America with nothing more than the jacket on his back.He took board with an old aunt to his mother, a spinster who lived in New York, who needed help with the chores. During the days he worked in the naval ship-yards until he met and married Nora Hart on June 3rd,, 1934.War on the European continent was eminent and Michael Patrick enlisted and did his tour with the Seabees off the coast of Normandy. When he returned, he and Nora started a family and in January of 1950, Michael Patrick opened a pub in New York City known as Connolly's.After his death in 1964, his wife Nora continue to raise her family on the revenue of the pub with a long established local clientele. Then in 1967 Nora, deciding that she could no longer keep up with both the maintance of a family and a bar, closed Connollys. One of her daughters Audrey, eventually married an Irish musician known as Doc Doherty and gave birth to their son Michael Patrick. So now, after some thirty-two years, my partners and I bring back Connolly's, in loving memory and honor of my grandfather, and my namesake, Michael Patrick Connolly.
