In all animals, the brain (or encephalon, from the Greek "in the head")is the control center of the central nervous system. Human brains, amongst other animals, exhibit a distinction between the gray matter (the dense cell bodies of the neurons) and white matter (fibers connecting the neurons). Deep in the brain, compartments of white matter (fasciculi, fiber tracts), gray matter (nuclei) and spaces filled with cerebrospinal fluid (ventricles) are found.
The brain controls an extensive variety of functions. It is the source of reason, intelligence, cognition, perception, attention, memory and emotion, aside from body regulation and motor function. Many of these functions, both mental and motor, are automatic, lacking a need for conscious awareness.
As a consequence of environmental stimuli, the receptive branches of the nerve cells (dendrites) experience neocortical growth. The neural network of connections are strenthened and enhanced by constant stimulation. Alternatively, studies have shown that a lack of stimulation to these nerve branches will cause their deterioration, ultimately killing off the connections entirely...
