About Me

This page is a portal for pan-Yugoslav rock'n'roll scene. Come here to see all the new bands, read about histroy of Yugoslav rock scene, find links to Yugoslav rock music on MySpace. Yugoslavia is a country that existed in Southern Europe for the better part of the twentieth century. Country fell apart in 1991. After that, individual republics (Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Macedonia) continued separately. But enough about politics - this is all about music. It is not easy to tell when exactly the rock scene in Yugoslavia started. First bands probably started in late 50s, but the scene did not become fully mature until the 70s. Whenever this page is updated, we will showcase one band from the Yugoslav rock'n'roll scene.
* Important disclaimer - the word "Yugoslavia" on this website should be merely understood as a geographic term, without any political connotations.
YUGOROCK4U RECOMMENDS:
DISCIPLIN A KITSCHME has a new record out entitled "Kada kazes muzika, na sta tacno mislis, reci mi?". Disciplina kicme started in early 1980s when Koja left Sarlo Akrobata. For years, Disciplina kicme was the leader in underground rock scene of Yugoslavia, always experimenting with new sounds, but still keeping the spirit of traditional rock'n'roll rebelion. When war starter in Yugoslavia in 1990's, Koja relocated to London and changed the musicians in the band and its name to Disciplin A Kitchme. The band is now back in Belgrade with yet another new line up. The new album is an excellent return to the old form, with Koja back on vocals. Visit their site to hear the new exciting tunes!
YUGOROCK4U FEATURED BAND:
DELFINI, ZG . When it comes to 60's, there was thousands of rock'n'roll and garage bands all over Yugoslavia. However, only a very few bands made any records. This is the story of a band which recorded perhaps the most exciting garage rock EP in the 60's. Their name is Delfini and they come from Zagreb. Several students with a professional singer Zdenko Juran formed Delfini in 1963. They played together for several years until Jugoton cut them a deal and published their first EP record. Their energy and creativity especially unleashed in an explosive James Brown cover which they (intentionally?!) misspelled I'll Go Crasy. However, the real highlight is an addictive blues version of the Macedonian folk song Kales bre Andjo , with an amazing keyboard solo by Petko Kantardzijev. Nikola Sarapa also delivered a fine guitar work. Much later in his career, Sarapa had an excellent hard rock band called Stop mostly based on Jimmy Hendrix covers. Unfortunately, the EP was also the end of Delfini's creative period. By the end of 1967 Juran and the bass player Raymond Rujic hired the entire new crew and published their second ep with an inferior musicianship. Still, their song Bebel about the French actor Jean Paul Belmondo form their second ep is regarded as a wonderful example of proto-punk.
