Portia started in the music business over 20 years ago, when her father BK Kirkland, former PD of WBLS in NY (see XM STATION THE GROOVE), exposed her to Hip Hop and DJs Mr. Magic and Marley Marl. Portia left the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater to pursue her passion as a B-girl and attempted to get noticed in NY nightclubs such as the infamous Latin Quarter, Rooftop, Roxy, Union Square. By 1988, Portia began a choreography and music video career working with many recording artists when there were few female dancers in the industry. In 1990, Portia joined Marley Marl's team as a writer/singer and signed a deal with A&M Records. Eventually Portia decided to leave the A&M lot when her music caught the ear of music mogul Benny Medina and Tyrone Williams. She signed a recording contract with Cold Chillin/Warner Bros. Records in 1991. In 1996, after completing her BA at Fairleigh Dickinson University in NJ, Portia began using her degree in public relations. She credits her mentors and friends Eric Eazy E Wright and Tupac Shakur for encouraging her to explore other areas of the music business. Portia has worked in marketing at Universal Records in NYC and LaFace Records in Atlanta, GA. She is also the former head of Marketing for Disturbing Tha Peace Records in Atlanta, GA. Presently, she runs her own company Chenoa Entertainment Marketing where she specializes in strategic planning, PR, and brand management.
