The reason for life..... is YOU!

About Me

Let me tell you about Therese Rose (aka DJ trees, naner, cheeza)...Since I was a little girl, I have been singing. My family and I used to stand around the piano and sing while my father played old tunes. I remember singing my first solo at school in 1st grade. It was Erie Canal. I was very shy back then and sang quietly, but the teacher could tell I had natural skill.I joined band in 5th grade, starting on drums. 3 years later, I decided to pick up horn. I got my first trumpet in 8th grade and started learning it 2 weeks before school started back up. When we did the test to see which chair we would be placed in, I got 2nd out of 9 players. It was really easy for me to pick up instruments and I would teach myself hours a day until I learned. Seeing I had accessibility to every instrument in high school, I went on to learn french horn, mellophone, baritone, trombone, cello, clarinet, flute and sax. (Once I knew horn, I usually picked up an instrument in about a week.) I was in every band: marching band, symphonic, concert, jazz band and orchestra. By 15, I realized that I want to be a music teacher, as much for the children as for the music aspect. At 16, my life started getting pretty crazy... I had started dating my best friend Sarah (secretively of course) and it was us against the world for a while. After that relationship ended, feeling depressed and isolated, I found myself getting into "boy". Nots boys (just yet), the other kind. That was not a good move on my part. School work was not being turned in, I started skipping classes and my ambition to do music was fading. One month before I was supposed to graduate high school, I got called down to the principal's office. She had told me some people had suspicions that I was doing drugs. After resisting for about an hour, i finally emptied my pockets for her. What she saw was a big shock, and gave me the choice of being suspended for a month, or get help and the suspension would only be for 5 days.Of course, my mother wanted to get me help, and lo and behold she somehow managed to get me into a treatment center in Minnesota the next day. I did NOT want to go at first, especially during withdrawls, but after 28 days, I didn't want to leave. I learned so many valuable lessons and started seeing my worth again.I came back to Michigan, got to graduate high school, then moved right back to Minnesota to live in a 3/4 way house. I did the program for a while, going to 2 to 3 meetings a day at first. To this day, I have never relapsed on that. It's been 9 years.I know that's pretty deep subject to be putting up for the world to see. I'm explaining that so you can understand what makes me Me. Since then, I have vowed to be honest, with myself and others, and I am grateful I lived through that. I learned a lot about my strengths and weaknesses, affirmed my self-will and when I become a teacher, I will know the tell-tale signs and will be able to help the kids one on one.I attended Wayne State University in 2000 for Instrumental Music Education. It was cool, but working over-time at Mongolian Barbeque wasn't leaving a lot of time for homework. I wasn't quite ready for that at the time. I will go back to school to get my education degree when the time is right. In 2004 after graduating cosmetology school, I met a karaoke host who after hearing me sing asked if I ever thought about being a DJ. I thought that sounded cool and so I started on my way to becoming a Wedding MC/DJ. I got my own tables and practiced at home, and within 3 years became one of the top and most referred DJ's in the company.Because I already had a good understanding of music and had some experience on the mic, it came quickly to me. I must admit, I was nervous the first couple shows I did alone. Now it comes naturally and every bride and groom tells me at the end of the night that they had one of the best times in their lives and give me big hugs. I'm proud of the fact that I can be a part of one of the most important days in someone's life and make all the guests happy.Around the same time, I had met some cool people, which led me to meeting the bass player of the all-girl band Lola Valley. She had asked me to sing background on a couple songs for a show at the Magic Bag, and I quickly became a permenant member of the band.Monica Blaire, Emily Rogers, Sarah Reznich, Aisha Ellis and I started creating a band that would soon get people talking. We frequently played at 5th Ave in Detroit (who had one of the best sound guy's in the D!) as well as other cool spots and festivals. We have played shows with Slum Village, Howling Diablos, T "Money" Green and Roadwork, Garden of Souls, Malik Alstin, Gabe Gonzalez from Enemy Squad and P-Funk All Stars, and more... I started DJing at the shows in between sets and got compliments on my tunes. I am a music lover after all, and I only play the good stuff. And I like the fact at the bars, I could play what I wanted and was able to bring a chill and funky vibe to the venues.Lola Valley brought so much energy to the stage, that people would come from near and far to rock out with the girls. It was my first "rockstar" experience, and I am so grateful to have met all the wonderful ladies in the group while growing quickly as a performing musician. I'm looking forward to playing out with the girls, whom I've grown to love, again.I've been in a few other projects since, but right now, I am putting a funk/jazz/neo-soul band together. We will be playing (only the funkiest) covers as well as some originals. And I'm talking that old funk... Funkadelic, Parliament, James Brown, Betty Davis, Gladys Knight, all that good stuff. Depending on the venue, we will also play some jazz and some neo-soul, like my girls Erykah Badu and Jill Scott.Give me a couple months to get this together, but look out for the new band that's gonna funk you right! If you are interested in booking this band at your bar, please email me. I know you will enjoy what we bring. Now you know about me... Thanks for reading this, and stay funky!!~Therese Rose~
