About Me

NO MORE MUSIC :-( The owner of the official Howlin' Wolf page apparently requested that the tunes be deleted from this fan page a while back, for copyright reasons. It's a shame that there can't be more than one place for people who enjoy Howlin' Wolf, and of course we're not selling anything here. But that's the way it goes....Chester Arthur Burnett, better known as Howlin' Wolf, was an influential blues singer, songwriter, guitarist and harmonica player. He was born in 1910 in Mississippi, and recorded in Memphis in his early career. Later he recorded in Chicago for Leonard Chess' famous label Chess Records. In the 50s and 60s, his gruff, powerful yet tuneful voice made him a Chicago blues legend. The Wolf was underappreciated during the 50s and 60s by mainstream U.S. audiences, but his music has endured. He was a major inspiration for the British rock bands of the 60s and 70s, and his influence can still be heard in the music of today. His songs have been covered by the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Sam Cooke, The Doors, Soundgarden, Clutch and many more. He died in 1976 and is buried in Hillside, Illinois.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Chester "Howlin' Wolf" Burnett on vocals, harmonica and sometimes guitar; Hubert Sumlin on lead guitar (usually); Willie Dixon on bass (sometimes); plus various other backing musicians.
Influences: Charlie Patton, who taught him the rudiments of guitar, as well as the Mississippi Sheiks, Tommy Johnson and country singer Jimmie Rodgers, whose famous "blue yodel" the Wolf integrated into his singing style. His harmonica playing was modelled on that of Rice Miller (Sonny Boy Williamson). The Wolf played with Robert Johnson in the Mississippi Delta. The music he would later play in Memphis and Chicago owed much to the styles of Patton and Robert Johnson. But thanks to his powerhouse voice, energetic live performances and underrated harmonica and guitar skills, the Wolf had a sound and persona that were all his own.
Sounds Like: Chicago blues, early R&B and rock 'n' roll
Record Label: Chess Records (also did a few sides for Modern)
Type of Label: Indie
