NEW BEST FRIEND:
A plus D - Close To Konichiwa Bitches (Robyn vs. The Cure) .. Found at skreemr.com
I worship all things Pop but, to me, the Pixies & Mozart & Chet Baker & John Denver & Trance all park in the same garage as ABBA.
In high school I fell hard for The Smiths, English Beat, Specials, Roxy Music, Depeche Mode, The Clash, The Cure, REM, and the Repo Man soundtrack.
Others on my Crush List: Sahara Hotnights, Bloc Party, Old 97's, Dance Hall Crashers, Shiny Toy Guns, Echobelly, The Soviettes, Metro Stylee, Bettie Serveert, Belly, Krezip, Kent, Alice in Videoland, Placebo.
Radio kills too many good songs & martyrs too many awful ones.
I feel like the only person who's stunned that Catherine Wheel wasn't bigger and may be the only person who KNOWS that Big Country were NOT one-hit wonders.
I love making mixes for my friends & sharing them like missionary bibles.
I dislike accessory bands that have better namechecks than soundchecks. Pitchfork Manifestos like Bjork, Ween, Pavement, White Stripes, Phish, I'm looking in your general direction.
I'll watch something awful over something half-good. Mediocrity is a waste of everyone's time.
I love horror movies, sci-fi, genre in general. I think Anime is redundant after one viewing.
Directors: Peter Weir, The Stevens Soderbergh & Spielberg, Frank Capra, Billy Wilder, Hitchcock, Kieslowski, Fellini.
If you want to learn every last thing about how to write a screenplay, read the script to Alien and watch the movie Jaws. Between those two flicks it's all there.
I weaned myself off television after seeing behind the curtain. 99% of all programming are Mad Libs designed solely to deliver commercials. Otto von Bismarck never said this about TV: "it's like sausages; it may be tasty but better not to see it being made."
Caveat: the best thing I have EVER seen on television -- in my entire life -- is THE WIRE.
Other shows I like: The Riches, Arrested Development, Veronica Mars, Newsradio, Barney Miller, Undeclared.
Up-to-date reading list can be found at Library Thing. I dig good writing, strong distinct voices and stories well told. Books are cool fresh water and I die of thirst if unslaked. I orbit fiction, mostly contemporary. I love discovering new authors.
I crave genre -- mystery, crime, hard boiled, horror, sci-fi that's not space opera. Books I've re-read: Catch-22 by Joseph Heller; Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll; Fool On the Hill by Matt Ruff; The Stand by Stephen King.
Lately: John Ajvide Lindqvist, Nicola Griffith, David Marusek, Laird Barron, Charlie Huston, Ken Bruen, Duane Swierczynski, Sean Stewart, Scarlett Thomas, Peter Watts, Robert Charles Wilson, Richard K. Morgan, T. Jeff Parker, Gregory Galloway, Jennifer Egan, Ray Banks, Allan Guthrie, Simon Spurrier, Mo Hayder, Norman Partridge, Michael Marshall, Martin Millar, Donald Ray Pollock.
My mother. My two sisters. My niece. My step-father. My St. Bernard. Steven Spielberg. Edward Hopper. Saints George and Lucy. Anyone who writes a fucking amazing script.
