Happiness, like freedom, requires courage.

About Me

I'm a PhD and one-time literature professor (UNL, 1968-78) who spent the '80s as a contractor/carpenter, then at the beginning of the '90s got interested in photography and embarked on a major project on the east bay street/squat/club punk scene. I had a couple of well-attended shows in late 2000, then dove back into my remodeling business for the next 3 1/2 years; during that period my only photography was going to shows on weekend evenings. I stopped photographing the street/squat scene and concentrated on bands and people at shows and house parties. Though there is a side of me that's shy and private and misanthropic, there is also a side that's a shameless schmooser. I am also a good listener. My pictures have hung inside the door of the Gilman club since '95, and they are throughout the book titled 924 Gilman. I've had enough pictures with bands' CDs and records that I've lost count (though it is worth noting that I've had pictures with almost everything that Mike of Oppressed Logic has put out). One recent record item is a band picture at Haz Mat house on the lyrics insert with the latest Deadfall 7". Before that I had a picture with a Born/Dead album. Voetsek recently put out a shirt with one of my pictures used on the front. Another shirt was put out in mid-'06 by The Cliftons using one of my pictures in which Will the singer is standing on the stage of the Arcadia Skate Ramp House, pulling his penis out of his shorts while a girl (who will remain nameless) pulls his pants down; under the picture it says Rock Out With My Cock Out. And the new Hammerlock album (titled "True Grit: The First Five Years) has a picture of mine as the main band picture on the insert. I've had Bay Area Scene band pictures in Maximumrocknroll magazine since 2005. My first front cover picture for MRR was Issue # 300, May 2008, which was a special Northern California issue. In Feb.-March 2006 I had a show at the PhotoLab Gallery in west Berkeley titled "Drunk and Happy (or Not): It's Party Time!" It consisted of 43 matted and framed 11 X14 fiber based prints. I'm currently assembling a set of 8 X 10 masters with book publication in mind. A SF film school graduate, Lindsey Waters, has made a 30 minute documentary about me and my photo work in the east bay punk scene, titled Take My Picture. The first showing of the documentary will be at the Gilman club, May 29, 2008. My web site is larrywolfley.com. Chris Sickdog put it together; check out his site: dogmalice.com.

My Interests

Metal music and spontaneous moments, photography and art.

I'd like to meet:

Underground punk scene men and women. Also artists, photographers, musicians, anyone creative and out of the mainstream.

Movies:

The Seventh Seal is all you need to know about movies, and life.

Books:

The main catalogue of the Library of Congress would be a start.

Heroes:

Weegee (who showed us what it is about), Robert Frank (though his political views are rather simplistic), Gerry Winogrand (an idiot genius, the greatest photographer who ever lived), Diane Arbus, Eugene Richards (the most inspiring living photographer).

My Blog

Direction for the Party Project.

Last night I attended a PCPA-sponsored portfolio review, where "experts" looked at one's work and made suggestions.  Chris Johnson, who teaches at CCA, was extremely helpful and perceptive. ...

Excerpt from James Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

[Stephen is speaking] The desire and loathing excited by improper esthetic means are really not esthetic emotions not only because they are kinetic in character but also because they are not more tha...

Issues, I've got issues.

I have a cluster of issues around being an photographer trying to make art out of candid pictures of other people, particularly people I know. One is the problem of intruding in other people's lives ...

My photographic direction.

So last night I finally got out to take my evening walk up to Telegraph Ave about 8:30, stuck a camera and a fresh roll of film in my pocket (needed to load the new roll, but strangely wasn't in a hur...

Art, continued:

Here's something from W. H. Auden, though I'm not sure what year he wrote it: The primary function of poetry, as of all the arts, is to make us more aware of ourselves and the world around us. ...

Orgasms and art.

So every night I take a walk from my house up Telegraph Ave. and back, a habit I've had since the days I used to photograph the people there a lot. I still run into people I know but not like before....
