About Me

......................................................... ROBBIE J DAVIES-STRIPPED BACK
......................................................... I have been a musician since I was thirteen having spent most of my playing days on the bass guitar. My playing has been limited to the South Wales area due to work commitrments. I started with boyhood bands as Black Night, Sunrise and in and out of various local bands as young people do. In my youth I had the honour of working with and learning off Steven Hopkins (ex NINE IRON), Keith Morgan (ex LAUGHING KARROTS) and Owen Jones (PANIC STATION). Having sold up my gear at seventeen I spent several years in the musical wilderness dabbling with the six string guitar at friends party's. 1984 saw a resurrection when my life changed through divorce and my new girlfriend (now my wife) encouraged me to start playing again. I formed a cabaret band Trading Places, later to emerge as SPARTACUS with great friend and vocalist Martin Knott. SPARTACUS recruited Jol (Malcolm Davey)-guitar, Phil Tanner-keyboards and Jinx (Steve Jenkins)-guitar, drummers came and went (actually we went through more drummers thsn SPINAL TAP). After playing around the club circuit in the Welsh Valleys SPARTACUS' demise came when Jol left and Martin emigrated to Margate. Jinx took over the lyrics and Brian Thomas (ex LAUGHING KARROTS, STORY'S) depped on drums amongst others. ............................................................ ..........................................................

............................................................ ..........................................................Ev entually we called SPARTACUS a day and I formed a duo with Jinx and found regular work as REDHOUSE. REDHOUSE emerged into a band recruiting Paul Laker-bass and Dick Davies-drums and was the residential band on thurdays and saturdays at the Rose and Crown Briton Ferry. Paul's inclusion brought a new challenge for me switching to six string and the purchase of my first American Strat. During this time Jinx joined PANIC STATION and I sat in with SANTA CRUZ, the reident friday band at the Rose and Crown. I also picked up dep work on the bass with PANIC STATION amongst others. An overload in Jinx's workload saw the end of Redhouse and the duo. 1990 brought another retirement until I put together a band with female diva Becky Griffiths, her fiance Dean Williams (now husband)-bass and my son Andrew-guitar. We played 1 gig, rehearsed for years and fizzled out. The remnants of this venture formed the Baglan Social Club jam band NO KARAOKE in 2004. NO KARAOKE- myself-guitar, Dean-bass, Andrew-guitar, Darren-drums, Don-guitar, is still an ongoing venture with the line up changing on every gig due to musicians availability. The jam sessions closed down Xmas 2005 but still play odd gigs.THE BLUES CRUISE Robbie Davies-vocals, guitars, bass, mandolin, banjo Dean Williams-bass, vocals, guitars, mandolin, jugs Alun Thomas-drums, percussion Seve Grey-harmonicas, flute, tin whistle Colin (The Rockin Rabbi) Goldring- guest guitar and vocalsTHE BLUES CRUISE formed in March 2006 from the remnants of the Baglan Social Club resident jam band NO KARAOKE. The band perform regular at the SLIMS BLUES JAM at the CHICAGO ROCK CAFE in Swansea. We are proud to be chosen to supoport CHRIS JAGGER and the SEAN WEBSTER BAND at the forthcoming blues festival at the above venue 29th May. The band play a range of blues classics and are always looking into the more diverse variety of blues and roots music. That is my musical career in a nutshell, not much to shout about but I have enjoyed every minute of it (there is always room for improvement- we are always learning). Beside the names mentioned above I have been honoured to have shared the stage and jammed with local icons Gary Pickford Hopkins (WILD TURKEY, EYES OF BLUE, RICK WAKEMAN) and Taff Williams (EYES OF BLUE, session player to many stars), Tweke Lewis (MAN, WILD TURKEY), Morty (RACING CARS) and all the members of the LAUGHING KARROTS-Andy Collins (now of the STORY'S) Gareth, Rob (also with the STORY'S) and Goss. I hope all the above mentioned musicians dont think that I am jumping on their bandwagon but they have been my biggest influences and I have learned so much from rubbing shoulders with them.
