Statement
My work explores the visual beauty generated by sound, documenting its effects upon water. Started in 2004 with an interactive installation that allowed viewers to create any sound they desired via a microphone, this sound was then shown manipulating a shallow pool of water. After several re-jigs of the design in 2006 the piece and the aesthetics created became the corner stone of my work, brushing aside my more challenging personal, dark painting work. Watching the ripples shimmer across a black pool I felt a very strong feeling of visual solace, something I craved in the real world. Beautiful, ambiguous and foreign landscape, all generated by man-made sound manipulating a natural body. Documenting my installation through photography and video has given rise to further visual explorations. With video I can manipulate the visuals within the fourth dimension, whereas the photography has helped me to understand its silent beauty. Now, in 2008, the photography work is visually informing new painting work.
Also in 2008 the video work is helping me to take the visuals away from their original grounded meaning. The experimental film ‘Possessed’, is working with this very visual concept.
My artistic influences over the years have leaned towards artists, who create visually stunning, emotionally charged pieces, artists such as Turner, Rembrandt, and Viola. Also artists exploring the visual beauty of sound, a huge influence has been the Russian painter Wassilly Kandinsky. The installation artist Susan Hiller has also added to my aesthetic understanding.
