We also host occasional nights at Thornton Little Theatre, Four Lane Ends, Thornton Cleveleys. We are the only promoters of alternative comedy on the Fylde coast and we do our best to provide the country's top comedians to an area otherwise untouched by alternative comedy's big touching stick. Come and give it a try!

The history of The Comedy Station

The Comedy Station has been running for over four years now. We (Mike and Ryan) were inspired by The Buzz Club in Chorlton, Manchester which was the first alternative comedy night we’d ever been too. This tired looking room in an old pub in a dodgy area seemed an unlikely setting for what became a legendary night. You could leave it a year between visits and sell all the same faces in the crowd. Well, we wanted something like that on the Fylde Coast so in 2002 we set up the rather oddly named “Barking Spider Comedy Club” at the West Coast Rock Café in Blackpool. We booked some cracking acts like Steve Harris, Mick Ferry, Tony Burgess and Justin Moorhouse but the crowds were scarce and so was the money so the club was wound up. Ironically the West Coast recently became home to Blackpool’s latest Comedy Club. They get the same acts as us and it’s £10 dearer!
In 2004 we set up a new club at The Downtown Bar underneath The Station in Blackpool. We called our new night “The Comedy Station” and opened to a half decent crowd with the fantastic Jason Manford, now a team captain on Channel 4’s “8 Out of 10 Cats”. Other memorable nights involved “Ideal’s” Seymour Mace and “Daily Star” columnist John Warburton and whilst we did have a few big crowds the atmosphere was never the best, in fact sometimes it was borderline hostile (Ryan was once attacked, but at least the culprit waited until he was off stage!). After a year the club had hardcore of regulars and things were beginning to look up. Hell, sometimes the room was even mopped and occasionally the staff emptied the ashtrays before the gig! Unfortunately the club was not given a chance by a change of management and now our old venue has joined the growing number of Gay clubs chasing the Pink Pound.
Not to worry though, we already had a new venue in mind, a function room we had been in for a party upstairs at “Lawdies” an old underage drinking favourite of ours in nearby Poulton-le-Fylde. The venue had recently been taken over and rebranded as “The Edge”. Our opening night with Charlie Chuck was packed out and the club has been a success story ever since. In the three years we’ve been at The Edge we’ve had great acts like Charlie Chuck, Gary Delaney, Ivan Brackenbury, Seymour Mace, Ava Vidal, John Gordillo, Steve Day, Simon Brodkin, Brian Damage and Krysstal, Steve Royle, Duncan Oakley and loads more.
Since we started six years ago many comedy clubs have sprung up and disappeared again. The thing that’s kept us going is a passion for the scene and a knowledge that the local people want good comedy at an affordable price. So here’s to the Comedy Station, delivering the best comedians the country has to offer as well as giving those up and coming acts a chance to shine. All this for a measly four quid. See you at The Edge!
