About Me

Everything starts with a song. But which song? Imagine Big Star playing cards with Buffalo Springfield while Apples In Stereo play the Wandering Genie over in the corner. Set it to music and, bingo, thats the West Seventies in a nutshell (or at least it is in a prerequisite biog analogy nutshell). For Hollywood producers who might be passing, the West Seventies is Die Hard on a tour bus. Capice?
The West Seventies Holy Trinity consists of Mick Morris (vocals, bass), Pavel Barter (vocals, 12-string guitars), and Robin Hurt (vocals, guitars, noise). Occasionally these musketeers are accompanied by drummer extraordinaire Dave Keegan and American producer / retired war veteran Col. Wil Masisak. The dust had barely settled on Ground Zero when the West Seventies first flew to Masisak's Boulder, Colorado, studio to start work on their first album, "The deeper you go".
Wait, we're getting ahead of ourselves here. Spewed from Dublin's mid-90s singer-songwriter scene like elusive kittens from the litter, Mick (a Dub), Pavel (a Nordie), and Robin (a Scot) began writing, touring, recording, and mastering the art of travelling the ferry to Wales without falling off. Marathon touring around Ireland and the UK, energetic live performances, and TV appearances on the BBC and RTE quickly won them a following.
Only a few months in existence, the group performed at Austin's annual music industry bloodbath SXSW before excited hacks; and consequent tours of the U.S. of A, accompanied by the awesome drumming of Ian McTigue, took in landmark venues like CBGBs in New York and the 40Watt in Athens, Georgia. From America to Holland, and the first of many visits where the Dutch would exclaim, "You have tight bodies. Yes! I see that from your tight pants. Yes, you are tight like tigers." Ahem.
After their debut e.p. "What the stars provide" received nationwide airplay, the West Seventies returned to America and the loving arms of Col. Masisak. Recorded at the foot of the Rocky Mountains with the help of a local strip-club DJ who, um, roadtested the work in progress, "The Deeper You Go", was released in 2004 to critical acclaim in Ireland. Today, the album is available in Tower Records, Dublin, or by emailing the band and asking nicely.
Having toured and performed with Irish artists like Paddy Casey, The Marshalls, Mundy, Juliet Turner, the Frames, Bell X1, and overseas draws such as Guillemots, Trashcan Sinatras and Alabama 3, the West Seventies have crashed the party and aren't about to leave.
Across 2006 and 2007, the band has been working on its second album with a summer 08 release date. Snippets of new material will be posted on this site and the West Seventies homepage; touring continues apace. Stay near, stay tuned, and remember the fat lady: everything ends with a song.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: thewestseventies.com
Band Members: In no particular order -Pavel Barter: the little fella on the big 12-string acoustic. Wields a mighty pen, drives the songs with twelve strings on fire and sings to you in a voice you will actually believe; a rare talent. The live wire that feeds the neon halo which surrounds us.

Mick Morris: the big Oaf on the even bigger bass. More importantly, possessor of the finest sweet-but-raw, honey-soaked husky keen you'll hear this side of Michael MacDonald on a good day in 1972. The predominant pen behind some of our finest epistles.

Robin Hurt: the chief picker, and a demon for knocking the tunes into shape when they get a bit cheeky. A musical whore par excellence; he gets around, and when he isn't gigging or recording with the world and his wife, he's at home...and home is right here, where the art is.

Influences: Tea, the finest of herb (if that's not available, whatever you've got), over-the-counter remedies in triple the normal dosage, determination, friendship, the songs that come from within us, kitchen-sink drama, anime, slack rhythm.
Sounds Like: The product of our influences, with at least three beady eyes always watching out for the manic pop thrill.
Type of Label: None

A personal affair

The home studio is a personal affair, or at least it's so behind the scenes that you can fudge stuff up and quietly press Delete before the Taste Police arrive. Without a home studio, or at least a st...

Living the high life (groan)

One day only: the West Seventies on a balcony. Balcony TV is cool because performers feel a wee bit like the Beatles atop the Apple Building, plus one wrong move and you're seconds away from snuff. ww...
