This is a long one....hold your breath if you really want to know...
You'll notice...if you are still reading...that I listen to a ton of really eclectic styles of music. For my attitudes and ideas about music...and a lot of other parts of life though...you only need to know that I did a lot of my growing up in the parking lots, small dirty all-ages joints, and back alleys of the hardcore punk scene....so punk is always a special thing for me above all others...read Greg Graffin's Punk Manifesto if you get time....got it in a blog right here...brhc.

The idiot box....the electronic friend...kill your television...
Television is such a dichotomous thing...it can bring information...or cause vegetation....provide entertainment....or frustrate. Mainly I despise reality television...and Fox News. But I don't watch much else either really...I prefer my wife, my dogs, my band, my friends...and television definitley can rot your brain....while poisoning your social skills at the same time....what a great one two punch that is....although I did work tech support at Cox Communications ...primarily internet and voip telephony support though (not anymore - Huzzah!!!). Pretty amusing, actually. When I do watch, it is news, documentaries, and non-fiction programming mostly, CNN, PBS, Science, History, Discovery, Animal Planet, DIY, channels like those. I have also watched fuse on occassion....and I did used to dig on a few shows like The X-Files, The Young Ones, Doctor Who, Star Trek, Buffy, Angel, and MST3K...but nothing intelligent or truly entertaining can last too long on TV.
Special Note:
MTV gets the big 1 finger salute....worst fucking thing that ever happened to music. Suck a dick. Corporate prefabber fucks using money to suffocate art for greed. Fuck you and eat your fishheads...
¥
Read, Read, Read, Read More and Read, Read, Read....find the time when you can....fuck the idiot box....ignore it as much as possible...or take in a good documentary....science show....something that feeds your intellect or your emotions....but mainly read.
Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them - Al Franken
From "Nueromancer" by William Gibson:
The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned
to a dead channel. Below is Night City, a 'deranged experiment in social Darwinism, designed by a bored researcher who kept one thumb permanently on the fast-forward button'. You will find a lot of the origins of ideas most people know only from newer Science Fiction in there...including everyone's favorite alternate cyber-reality, "The Matrix"...check it out...
I like a lot of specific works of fiction or philosophy....many of which are heavily message-oriented such as Cyber Punk, Nueromancer, A Scanner Darkly, Animal Farm, Watership Down, Alas Babylon, Lord of The Flies, Dune, The Stand, 1984, Where The Wild Things Are, Lord Jim, The Canteburry Tales, A Clockwork Orange, Arabian Nights, God Of Small Things, The Dark Half, The Scream, Metamorphosis and Other Stories by Franz Kafka, Heart of Darkness, A Modest Proposal, The World That Jones Made, Memoirs Found in a Bathtub, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Better Times Than These to name just a very, very few.
I also read a great deal of social commentaries as well as politcal and scientific non-fiction.....The Poverty of Philosophy, The Communist Manifesto, The Kama Sutra, Beyond Good and Evil...altogether an eclectic mix.
As far as entire bodies of work by specific authors are concerned I like pretty much anything written by the following geniuses and freaks...among others.
Henry David Thoreau, Phillip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, Frederick Pohl, Edgar Allen Poe, H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, H. P. Lovecraft, Anne Rice, H. R. R. Tolkien, Mary Shelly, Michael Moorcock, Stephen Hawkings, Carl Sagan, Johnathon Swift, Lord Byron, Joseph Conrad, Herman Melville, Aldous Huxley, Dr. Suess, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Stanislaw Lem, Hunter S. Thompson, Douglas Adams, Franz Kafka, William Gibson, Emily Dickinson, Willam Shakespeare, Ernest Hemmingway, Anias Nin, most of the classical philosophers, and any and all of the authors who wrote for the Sanctuary series....like I said before...among others...
Oh yeah...and never forget...
"Flying is easy. All you have to do is throw yourself at the ground and miss."
- Douglas adams, from Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy.
Let's not forget COMIC BOOKS and the creative geniuses who make the best of them...like John Byrne, Frank Miller, Wendy Pini, Howard Chaykin, gotta mention Stan Lee, and so many others....Love a lot of classics like old Daredevil, X-Men (esp. Age of Apocalypse, the graphic novels, and the Wolverine miniseries), Alpha Flight, Iron Man, The Hulk, The Fantastic Four, Spider Man...and even more lesser known and independent books like Warlock, American Flagg, E-Man, grimjack, John Sable Freelance, Iron Wolf, Cody Starbuck, Hellboy, Painkiller, Crossgen, Witchblade, The Darkness, TMNT when it was a cool book instead of a bad kids show, Cynical Man, Tank Girl, Elfquest, Spawn, New and Golden age Captain America (yes really...).
I also especially love graphic novels like Ronin, Batman - The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark night strikes again, Elric of Melnibone, Magneto - Rogue Nation, and others.
