Escape Entertainment Press Release - September 07
On Wednesday September 5th, the office of Escape Entertainment was subject to a raid conducted by the RCMP, with a warrant to search the premises and seize property due to suspicions of incompliance to music copyright laws. They seized all computers and CD's used for making hip hop "mixtape" compilations. The popular "mixtapes" feature music by both local and international artists, are used by Escape Entertainment solely for promotional purposes, and are never sold for profit. These compilations are also available on the website for free download. The creation of these compilations is a minor part of Escape Entertainment's business functions, yet due to the events of September 5th, the entire company has been forced to cease all operations for the next 90 days. No charges have yet been laid, but the investigation is currently underway. Escape Entertainment feels strongly that they are being unfairly targeted in this situation. Their goal has never been to garner a profit from copyrighted music artists, and they have never claimed to own the rights to any music used in the promotional compilations. Escape Entertainment maintains its vision of keeping hip hop culture alive in Montreal, and bringing the best in hip hop entertainment to its loyal supporters. Escape Entertainment is maintaining their focus on bouncing back from this episode with the loyal support of their followers and collaborators, and continuing to share and promote quality hip hop.
