BAYBEATS is Singapore's own local annual indie music festival at Esplanade. Since 2001, it has sought to showcase good local, regional and international indie bands, give them an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas, and bring to audiences a fun, free-for-all weekend celebration of great live indie music in a variety of sounds such as post-rock, punk, emo, electro and hard rock.
Now BAYBEATS has become one of the most massive and anticipated music festivals in Singapore, hosting bands from countries such as Malaysia, Norway, UK, USA, Australia and of course, our very own Singapore, and drawing a growing audience by the thousands. And one of the best things about it is that it is free.
Presented by Esplanade, BAYBEATS is produced each year by Awakening Productions, a not-for-profit enterprise, founded in 1998, that creates music and art platforms for artistes, bands and DJs. Awakening Productions is affiliated with charity organisations, All Good Gifts Limited (AGGL) and Teen Challenge Singapore, and has close working relationships with the National Arts Council (NAC), National Youth Council (NYC), and Ministry Of Community, Youth and Sports (MCYS) as its platforms have social and youth outreach objectives. Awakening has organised some of Singapore 's most memorable gigs and festivals, most of which are skewed towards modern fringe culture, and partnered music and entertainment industry establishments. In 2002, Awakening birthed its music distribution/artist management arm WAKE ME UP MUSIC , which has now grown to include a music studio and retail outlet.
BAYBEATS is just one of many programmes presented by Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay. Esplanade, one of the world's busiest arts centres and a not-for-profit organisation, officially opened on 12 October 2002. Esplanade aims to be a performing arts centre for everyone, and its programmes cater to its diverse audiences. Its programme line-up spans all genres to encompass music, dance, theatre and visual arts, with a special focus on Asian culture. Esplanade houses world-class performance spaces, supported by a comprehensive range of professional support facilities and services. In the past year, Esplanade welcomed over seven million visitors and hosted over 1,800 performances
