About Me

Hakim K. Wilson aka SafarEye was born on April 16, 1977 in Bainbridge, Georgia but our family relocated and I was raised in Brooklyn, New York.
At the age of three, my father Al Hajj Mubdi Mutakabir introduced me to African drum and dance music. My first performance was with the Calabash Dance Theater in 1981 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (B.A.M.).In 1985 I joined Djoule African, a drum and dance company. We performed at the Apollo Theater in Brooklyn, New York winning first place at the first days performance and second place on the following day.
Djoule African traveled from state to state with performances in Baltimore, Connecticut, New Jersey, and all over the five boroughs of New York. We performed at various events, such as weddings, birthday parties, and Kwanza celebrations.
My passion for music grew stronger the more I performed. My father, Al Hajj Mubdi, introduced me to one of his good friends, Sekou who also shared a deep passion for African music. At that time he also resided in Brooklyn. Sekou taught me how to make two African drums from scratch that are from Guinea West Africa. One is called a Djimbe and the other is called Doun Doun.
In 1987, I used my new skills and went into business for myself in order to make a financial contribution to my family. At the age of ten, I was using my new skills to make, sell, and repair African drums.
Our family relocated to Atlanta, Georgia in 1990. There I assisted my father in building a cultural center named Djoule African House of Celebrations. At the center, I taught drum classes and also formed a group named Djoule African Jr. Drummers. After two years in Atlanta, in 1992 I returned back to New York. Sometime later in Brooklyn, I began performing with an African drum and dance group named Ayoluwa African Dance Theater Inc. Our performances included block parties, The June Balloon Festival at the Brooklyn Childrens Museum, The Adelco Black Arts Festival for Mayor David Dinkins, African Street Festival at Boys and Girls High, Stony Brook University,Medger Evans College, The Poconos, and the Crown Heights Youth Collective. We also won first place at a performance at the Apollo and were featured on a New York News 1 telecast from HRA at Tompkins Square Park.
In 1995, I came back to Atlanta. There I began drumming with Africa Sogaye (which means Sun of Africa) Guinea West African Dance Theater Inc.Our performances in Atlanta included The Apex Museum for young audiences of Georgia, The Auburn Street Festival, The Dogwood Festival in Piedmont Park, A commercial for Coca Cola, The West End Performing Arts Center, and Underground Atlanta, The Georgia World Congress Center, and The CNN Center. We also appeared as guest artist with The Dancers Warehouse.
College performances included Moorehouse, Spelman, Agnes Scott, and Georgia Tech and university performances were at Clark Atlanta, and Georgia State.
Outside of Atlanta we performed as guest artist for Djoliba Don and at The 3 Rivers Music Festival in Columbia, South Carolina, The Ingunoko Festival in Charlotte, North Carolina, and at the Harriet Tubman Museum in Macon Georgia.
In 1996 I began to feel that it was time for a change. I needed to do something different. I began writing and producing Hip-Hop music. And formed a Hip-Hop group called The Sahabahs. Our first album, Da Sunna Da Betta is in the final stages of completion.
The Sahabah have had performances in Atlanta at the Malcolm X and The African Street Festivals. They have also performed in a talent show at the College Park Auditorium presented by Priority Records, and have opened up for Hip-Hop artist KRS-1 of Boogie Down Productions at the African House of Performances (A-HOP), and the Hip-Hop group Dead Prize also at the A-HOP and Club Casino In Atlanta Georgia.
My purpose is to brings a new style of music to Hip-Hop by incorporating African drum, Arabian beats, Reggae, and Jazz into my creations.
Eye decided to go beyond my interest in music and to pursue acting. In 2002 eye was featured as an extra in an independent film directed by Yves called Choose.

Introducing the new and improved game of chess called "The Hip-Hop Chess Set". This is truly the Hottest games out now. Well not yet on the market but soon it will be in stores all over. Basically the rule of this game is the same. The concept is simple. It's my party verses your party. Since the roots of Hip-Hop started out with the party, each player starts with all the elements needed for a successful Hip-Hop throw down. From the DJ to the party people. Now the object is for you to rock, rock on. In order to keep your party going, You have to shut down your opponents party by capturing the DJ. After all, What's a party without the music? If your smart, you can rock the show. If not, then you might as well pack it up.

The concept behind the pieces:

The King aka The DJ

Chess and Hip-Hop has so many similarities. In Chess, The King is the most important piece in the game while in Hip-Hop the DJ / Music Maker is the most important. The King isn't the strongest piece on the board, but the game cannot be played without him. You can capture all the pieces but the game is not over until the King is captured. In Hip-Hop, It's the same thing with the DJ. In the world of Hip-Hop, it would be impossible to make music without the DJ or the music maker. In a party, You can take away all the things like the Emcee's, The Dancer's, The Writer's, The B-Boy's and excedra. But as long as the music is still playing, The party will continue which makes the DJ The King.

The Queen aka The Emcee

The Queen in chess is the most powerful piece in the game. She can move more freely then any other piece on the board which makes her great in defense and offense. The Emcee is the Exact same way. There words are powerful and can move a crown as well as a nation. The Emcee moves Freely on stage to pump up the crowd while the DJ has to stay still because of his equipment. At the beginning of he game the Emcee is placed right by the DJ just like a king and his Queen being able to rhyme with an offensive or defensive manner. Which makes the Queen The Emcee.

The Bishop aka The Graphitti Writer

The Bishop is a very important piece that moves at an angle. When the Bishop strikes, It unexpected because it's a background piece that is conservative, Quiet and consistent with his game. The Graphitti Artist moves like the Bishop while using various angles and making sure the backgrounds and flyers look right. Every Graphitti Artist is able to express themselves through a good angle with quiet and unexpected loudness known as art which makes the Bishop The Graphitti Writter.

The Knight's aka The Breakdancer's

The Knight's are the most unique pieces on the board. They are the only pieces that have the ability to jump over other pieces and change directions all in one move. The Knight's are considered to be kind of dangerous but very exciting. They are also the only pieces on the board that has two characters playing at once which are the horse and the rider. The Breakdancer's resemble the Knight's with there ability to twist, turn, jump, fall and freeze in various directions making them the ultimate entertainer's. They can please the crowd with a solo or do a performance that u will never forget which makes the Knight's the Breakdancer's.

The Rook's aka The Security Guard's

The Rook's are usually castle shaped pieces on all four corners of the board in the beginning of the game. The Rook's only move in straight lines to eliminate anything in it's path. They really lack mobility but have strength while in a club or Hip-Hop venue, the Security Guard holds down the fort eliminating any uninvited rowdiness which makes the Rook's the Security Guard's.

The Pawn's aka The Party People

Most people don't see the pawn's as important pieces but if you know how to use them the right way, they can possibly win the game. The Party People are the same way. Without them, everything is obsolete. Whom would you perform for? And how would you or the venue make money? A person's first glance of Hip-Hop is usually from party going. The person usually picks what type of Hip-Hop party to be a part of between the Breaker's, the DJ's, the Emcee's, the Writer's or B-Boy's or some people usually pick more then one party which makes the Pawn's the Party People.

The Board

What I have decided to do was make regular chess squares and a backdrop with the map of the Bronx. This is symbolizing and paying respects to the birthplace of Hip-Hip. In a game of chess, you usually have eight spaces moving forward and across which gives you a total of sixty-four spaces to outthink and strategize.

Hopefully this great new invention will give people from the inner city, kid's as well as adult's an opportunity to play chess while at the same time teach the world the meaning and history of this force known to us as Hip-Hop. The Hip-Hop Chess Set will be in stores near you very soon for you to play, learn and enjoy. So please keep a look out. If you have any questions or concerns, you may send me an email.

Thanks for taking the time out to read..
