Sounds Like: ALBUM REVEIW - "Finally, the debut album from Perth based Luxury Car. The clean and uncomplicated electro found on their 'Heart of the Matter' E.P also radiates throughout this record. Brazenly entrenched in the sounds of the 1980s, merging fastidious synthesised noise and melancholy, candid vocals from John (which are at times juxtaposed by the evocative and haunting vocal duties with Louise - as on "Repulsion").
In all, it's a great record, riddled with memorable melodies and pulsating bass lines. Annie's Well has got all the Factory Records values, but feels more comfortable for grasping modern influences too.
'Gamma Rays' closes this album, pushing close to the six minute mark, proving that there's more to Luxury Car than the 'Indie/Pop crossover' tag they've attracted. A sinister-sounding, more experimental song, which begins with a sample that sounds like it has been lifted from a classic cult movie - just like their name." 5/5IS THIS MUSIC? issue 23
"electronic pop doesn't really sum them up - from the line dancin' beats of "Lucy 3" to their definite affinity to New Order and Joy Division on some of their "heavier " tracks. like many bands; they're gigging and recording and picking up good press. Unlike so many, they are going places. Trust us" - IS THIS MUSIC? magazinePLAYLOUDER SINGLE OF THE WEEK - ""If you like that Secret Machines joint, you'll love this one, plus you'll get the cool points for supporting indie labels in cold places. Hailing from Perth, Scotland, Luxury Car seem to specialise in the sort of early New Order beats and Bauhaus atmospherics beloved of well, everyone, but with a healthy dose of weirdness and a refreshing lack of disaffected posing. It's hard to tell whether this is a single or an EP, because each of these tracks could easily be the lead - there's no seconds here. 'The Miracle Year' could sit nicely alongside the Cure's 'A Forest' or 'Planet Earth'-era Duran Duran, while 'In The Event' calls to mind, dunno, Pale Saints? A keeper." - www.playlouder.com"They may have split up and formed New Order, but the spirit of Joy Division lives on in John Robertson's brooding, deadpan vocal delivery and dark rhythmic beats. With elements of country and new wave thrown into the mix, their originality and ability to captivate really impressed me and was particularly well received by the appreciative crowd." - TBreak Website
