On November 3, 1997, DJs Siraiki (aka Vivek Bald) and Rekha joined forces to found the first club-night in the nation dedicated to the cutting edge of South Asian electronica. Originally a series of fundraisers for Bald's documentary Mutiny: Asians Storm British Music, about the roots of the 1990s UK "Asian Underground" explosion, the club "Mutiny" quickly became a force of its own on the New York City scene, delivering a hard-driving mix of South Asian classical, folk, and film music with drum 'n bass, jungle, hip-hop and dub. Mutiny was fired up by a crew of rising young DJs - Navdeep, Anju, and Zakhm - and over its six years attracted a roster of all-star guests from all over the globe - from Talvin Singh, State of Bengal, Joi, Badmarsh & Shri and members of Asian Dub Foundation, Black Star Liner, and Fun^Da^Mental to the Midival Punditz, Karsh Kale, Mutamassik, Badawi, Mike Ladd, DJ Spooky, and Ming&FS This November 3rd, on the 10th anniversary of Mutiny's founding, the full Mutiny crew will return to the decks for one more night of musical insurgency, featuring long-time co-conspirator, percussion virtuoso and electronica pioneer Talvin Singh - who is currently finishing work on his third full-length studio album "Sweet Box" - and showcasing the rising talent of Shaa'ir+Func, a live outfit born in the crucible of Mutiny nights past. Whether you missed it the first time around or have been waiting for its return, this is your chance to become part of the Mutiny!
MTV Online says about Navdeep: "In a music scene quick to throw around the title of 'DJ' to anyone who simply masters the fader, it is refreshing to see someone take two records, break the songs down, and patch them back together into a tapestry of luscious grooves and head-noddin' rhythms."
"Yaathra is literature set to music..." -Houston Press
"From start to finish, Yaathra takes the listener on a transglobal journey..." -Ethnotecho.com (4.5 out of 5 stars)
"...infectious piano hooks complementing the likes of DJ SHADOW...This IS the best of the best in NYC." - Asianvibrations.com (9 out of 10)
Voted Best DJ in New York by New York Press magazine
The visionary DJ/producer/turntablist/tabla player brings raw passion to the decks, turning crowds on continuously with a stylish melange that slides from South Asian sonics and his native Bhangra rhythms to hard-hitting DnB, pounding hip-hop cuts and fragments of furious rock. Fusing together refined mixing with ecstatic live shows, Navdeep never makes it easy to categorize himself or his sound. Always evolving, always bringing the hottest beats no matter the genre, Navdeep is one of the scene's most innovative talents. After celebrating the international success of his brilliant debut album Yaathra, Navdeep is ready to bring it back to where it all started from, NYC for the next chapter.
From full length album to hyper singles, haunting ambient soundtrack scores, and critically praised remixes for hip-hop MCs and electronica stars like Karsh Kale, Navdeep's original production concepts give his legions of fans a fresh sound that's equal parts Indian classicism, NY hip-hop grit and charged electronica messages.
Couple that innovation with Navdeep's intense studies of jazz and tabla drumming since the age of ten and you have one of the most distinctive approaches to production and turntablism in the game today. To see Navdeep spin is to witness a soul-moving performance. Layering his own self-produced tracks, unique remixes and live drumming over his sets, Navdeep is the sound of the brave new world-innovative, multi-ethnic, and all the way live.
