I can't HEAR you, your LIFE is talking too loud!"

About Me

(JOHN 3:30)
...But, that's what MySpace pages are FOR after all, aren't they? So even though I'm not into talking about me, I guess if there were ever a time or place, this is IT. So SCROLL DOWN and I'll force myself - ...as unto The Lord... - after a little traveling MUSIC and today's selection from SCRIPTURE:
If you really must ask "ABOUT ME" -nicely- or how I'm doing or whatever, my stock answer is the reply made famous by author, broadcaster, and Christian financial coach, Dave Ramsey:
"BETTER THAN I DESERVE."
Life ain't easy. But then again, NEITHER AM I.
So, am I some kind of big TOUGH GUY?
Naw, I just PLAYED one (TORUK The Barbarian) for ten years at The Texas Renaissance Festival!
The real answer to that question is YES in one way and NO in just about every other.
On the ONE hand, I've really NO other choice folks. The good Lord has seen fit to pour me into THIS physical form, given me more than enough personality to match, and has entrusted me with the might of Sampson. (who am I to argue?)
But - on the OTHER hand - never fear. I am probably the gentlest giant you'll ever meet. I'm a dedicated, loving father and husband; a peacemaker and patriot; with the mind of Christ, heart of a warrior, hands of an artist, the determination of your favorite superhero, and I only ever use my powers for GOOD.
(Heh, this is starting out right spiffy!)
But I'm first and foremost a real-live fanatical/on-fire take-no-prisoners born-again CHRISTIAN, and my faith is based solely upon my RELATIONSHIP with Jesus Christ, and my FELLOWSHIP with other genuine Christians.
And, like Jesus Himself, I'm NOT into RELIGION!
While a TRUE BELIEVER to the core, I'm what you'd call a PALADIN PARIAH, the quintissential ANTI-BULLY, and hardly what anyone expects. Literally. Whether or not you THINK you've got my number and sized me up, figured me out, and slapped some steriotypical LABEL on me as "WHATEVER-IT-IS-YOU-THINK-I-AM," you're in for a suprise. (-MABYE in for a shock.) Spend any amount of quality time with me, and you'll realize I've eluded classification; defied your steriotype; shattered your preconceptions; and likely blown your cover.
(Straight up? -SOME folks can't handle that!)
"Character is like a tree and reputation like its shadow.
The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing."
-ABRAHAM LINCOLN (1809 - 1865)
An individual should be judged by WHAT THEY DO. The ACTIONS they DO or DO NOT take, rather than what others say about them -or whatever they might say about themselves. I believe that when you want to know THE TRUTH about someone, don't look at what is SAID-
WATCH AT THEIR FEET to see which way they're really headed! ...Because the FEET don't lie.
I WALK my TALK.
-Just WATCH ME.
Once you've gained my trust, I'm intensely unflaggingly LOYAL. Anyone who's EVER been a friend of mine will ALWAYS be one -NO MATTER any newfound differences in ideology or WRONGS done to me!
Now, if you HARM my family or friends, my DUTY is to righteously protect them. I might even become God's HAMMER should He choose to place me in the conflict. But, without clear imperative otherwise, I choose to see the BEST in a person, not the DENTS, even when they're acting out badly and could use a good pounding to straighten them out.
The fact that I love my neighbor does NOT mean you get a free pass to do harm to yourself - or anyone else - around me. Sometimes "loving" someone involves some TOUGH LOVE, and resolving to do neccesary things that might not seem real pleasant at the time. So whenever I have what SEEMS an adversarial relationship with someone, it's never vindictive from MY end, but only as unpleasant as it HAS to be so eventual healing has a chance. I'm ALWAYS ready to help someone - even an enemy - in as kind a manner as will have any positive effect.
There's hope for everyone, so once I develop a love toward you, it will always be there, difficulties notwithstanding. And if I don't know you well enough to feel love toward you, I'll extend it as an ACTION regardless. That's the example my Lord has set for me, and requires of me toward others.
Besides being blessed (cursed?) with a deplorable excess of personality, I've a myriad of God-given talents, NONE of which - admittedly - can I attribute to any hard work or extensive study. Whereas my forte' is creativity, I found early on I had been inexplicably gifted with exceptional eye-hand coordination, the manual dexterity to back it up, and a restless intelligence that gave me no peace unless I was putting it to some kind of use. Drawing, sculpting, painting - WHATEVER - It was always just THERE, improved as it were through trial-and-error, repetition, and simple practice.
I see it as a testimony to God's sense of humor that he'd bestow the talents and abilities on me that He HAS. It's comical also, that in spite of their large size and the brutal punishment I put them through (in my workouts), I still have an artist's hands!
At my age, I can only WONDER what I could have done with my natural talents had I followed GOD's plan for my life instead of my own.
The ONE thing I've always been sure of though, is that I was born to be a husband and father. And it just comes naturally. Although I seem to have failed my eldest child, I'm doing my best to raise my children with the highest christian standards, yet I'm sure ol' dad's attitude and eccentric flair has rubbed off just a BIT.
As a child, I was what you'd classify as the classic overly intelligent A.D.D. poster child (even though I personally don't believe such a condition actually exists). I was a source of frustration for most of my teachers, too noticeable and unpopular with my Principals, and therefore had to attend different schools from year-to-year just to stay alive.
Looking back, the reality was that I'd been a victim of administrative cruelty (It's just amazing what people got by with back in those days). But it's all good. I never understood it then, but I realize in hindsight that God was toughening me up and strengthening me - desensitizing me, if you will - against the tides of undeserved injustices that would typify my life later on.
To my fellow classmates, I had always been, and would always be, the CLASS CLOWN. In elementary, I was the skinny kid, a fatty in Jr. High, but got real lean and suddenly grew to 6'2" in 8th grade.
Thus, my childhood school life as a human pinball stopped. While still a high-strung indomitable personality, my incessant disciplinary issues faded significantly, and I wasn't the picked-on kid anymore. I habitually underachieved when engaged in activities that were thrust upon me, avoided notice at my choosing, and learned to use my restless intelligence to fly below the administrative radar instead. At the same time, I grew so big that it was hard to ever blend in, but at least I was immune to being victimized or pushed around anymore.
It all just came naturally though, and I've been that way ever since.
In my teens, I was as at home with everyone - from the geeks to the jocks; the cons to the socials; the kickers and the brothers. EVERYONE was my friend. But - being the freest of free-spirits - I chose to run with the freaks in the smoking area, skipping out and intentionally accruing just enough credits to graduate on time. Whereas this worked for ME, I'm seeing to it that my children do things RIGHT, because the habits you establish in those years set the pace for your LIFE. I've spent most of mine as a dilettante, always getting intensely into whatever I'm interested in at the time, only to drop it later in favor of my next pusuit. Thus, I've lived as an underachiever -an idiot savant- and jack-of-all-trades but master-of-none.
...Y'know, I could-a been a contender!!!
Professionally, I've worn many hats down through the years. The first Dollar I ever earned was at my Dad's used car lot as an auto detailer. And as one of the top three artists at my school, it was only natural I worked as a silk-screen concept and production artist until graduating (and worked a second job as a bus-boy at the "Sambo's restaraunt" just up the street).
My intention all through school had been to go into commercial animation as a career. But I was a real idealist back then, and intended to take a full year after high school just to kick back and party up, and seek no job nor college - yet - and decide where to go next in life.
But I had been heavily crushing on a certain girl for a couple years, who - on Christmas day - revealed she just wasn't interested. So I handled my heartache the way I always would handle life's setbacks: I concentrated on upgrading and improving myself.
So I up and joined the Air Force.
I'd intended to enter service in a graphic art capacity, but with my entry test scores showing I had a ridiculously high - innate - mechanical aptitude, they convinced me to go in as a tactical aircraft maintenance technician. I was one of two individuals who - at the mere rank of Airman Basic - was experimentally assigned to the 64th OMS T-37 and T-38 Repair & Reclamation shop (a section of aircraft repair reserved for experienced technicians ranking Sgt - and above), and spent my term in military service keeping Tweets and Talons in the air.
In the "lost years" after the death of my good friend, I worked as a backup cook; delivery courier; NEISD school bus driver: and actor/stunt combatant & sword fight choreographer in environmental theater.
But my day job for the last eight years has been as a radio announcer/board operator. I've served at KENSradio am1160, News radio am1200 WOAI, and christian talk radio am630, KSLR, in San Antonio, where I felt most at home. I'm also pursuing concurrent careers as a film actor and as an inspirational christian writer for various faith-based publications. I've also have the pleasure of occasionally working venue backstage security for my friend Greg Carnes (& Nathaniel Mack w/Hope Entertainment) at area christian concerts. ALL of which I find immensely fulfilling.
In my life, I've gotten away scott-free with so much more than I ever should have, and have -conversely- been accused (and branded guilty) of things I'd never consider doing. ...Usually without my ever knowing! In fact, I figure there's not much you can accuse me of that I HAVEN'T done much worse than in my adventures.
And those who've known me since back in the day will recognize it's a MIRACLE that I've been absolutely illegal-substance and intoxicant-of-any-kind FREE for over SIX YEARS now!
I've realized being under the influence (of ANY kind - legal or NOT) impedes sensitivity to the consistent leading of The Holy Spirit, as well as that small, still voice God gave us called CONSCIENCE. So, after a life of intensive recreational self-medication, I'm DONE with all that. After "putting away" enough for several men in my time, I've truly put away the folly of clouding my spiritual acuity once and for all. Those of you who don't hear from Him anyway won't notice the difference, but as for ME, I've not had so much as the smallest sip of wine (or even BEER) - nor any other mind-altering substance - whatsoever (not even second-hand smoke, folks)!
Which means I'm absolutely 100%:
The bottom line is that -WHATEVER my sins were- I've REPENTED and don't practice them today!
So, GO AHEAD. BRING IT ON....
The GOOD NEWS is: you're reading a blurb written by a walking dead man. I gave my heart and life over to the living Christ, and left MY will, MY desires, and MY OLD LIFE beneath baptismal waters. The cleansing flow is in effect, brother!
I stepped down from the throne in my heart, and let the risen Jesus take His rightful place there, from NOW 'till forever and EVER!
So, don't confuse my KINDNESS with WEAKNESS. When you face ME, I come before you IN THE NAME OF JESUS, my friend!
...And that's how I ROLL...
I believe fulfilling play is essential to a healthy existence and well-rounded intellect. A few GAMES you might catch me playing in my spare time are:
And by the way, in case you were curious:
95%
Just to clear things up: YES, count me as one of those uber-geeks who dig on superhero movies! And even though I don't rise to the level of a bona fide TREKKIE, I'm totally jazzed about the digital remastering, upgrading, and weekly re-airing of STAR TREK: The Original Series!

Music:

Although I was always an old-school rocker, primarily into classic metal, as well as hard and progressive rock, I'm actually an eclectic listener, and my musical tastes run the gamut across most genres and styles:

I come from a generation that focused on ROCK, but I could get into pretty much anything that was high quality (Especially if it had a strong storytelling theme, such as that found in concept albums):

In my area of San Antonio, we were raised with the radio influence of Joe Anthony & Lou Roney of KISS/KMAC, giving airplay to worthy talent and bringing them to Randy's Rodeo and The Hemisfair Arena to either sink or swim.

The San Antonio concert audience was infamous nationwide, and many performances here were included on live albums those days.

Our response could literally make or break unknown bands, and the San Antonio reaction was instrumental to the promotion and eventual nationwide success of bands like Scorpions and Judas Priest, and Canadian bands Rush, Triumph, & Moxy.:

It was a real community mindset when it came to "must have" music. There were certain records essential to ANY legitamate music collection, and we all had the same albums:

But at this stage of my life, even though I give the old stuff a nostalgic listen once in awhile, I'm immersed in contemporary Christian music.

And I want to thank The Lord right now for people of vision and integrity that bring CHRISTIAN bands into town much the way Joe Anthony and Lou Roney did back in the day:
"One gig at a time, baby."
-GREG CARNES
Nowadays, I realize that music is a creative gift FROM God, ultimately meant to be given BACK to Him in praise and worship. Thus, whereas I still give the old tunes a listen here and there, it's become sort of like "junk food" to my soul - it still TASTES good, but ultimately, is UNHEALTHY.

After all -you ARE what you EAT. (That applies spiritually!) I groove now on songs that REALLY cut to the core of how I feel about imitation/cultural christianity! That's why I feed my spirit with TRUTH and give priority to genuinie Christian music that's relationship inspired and

Movies:

My deepest heart is for well-made, edifying cinema, and it's all too rare.
Frankly, Christian features need to play some serious catch-up with secular production budgets and quality, AMEN? Although there's nothing intrisically WRONG with lower-budget movies in general, the few recent "faith" films that measure up are:
"It takes the glory of God to conceal a matter. It is the glory of kings to seek it out."
-ESTHER of Susa (Hadassah)
"How do we raise such a child?"
-MARY
"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."
-JESUS CHRIST
"Remember that God made men equal."
-WILLIAM WILBERFORCE
I must point out a movie that delivers the goods regardless of it's shoestring budget and stiff acting. The story and message outshine these minor setbacks, and the film's emotional purity really delivers:”…if we WIN, we praise Him. And if we LOSE, we praise Him. Either way, we honor Him with our actions and our attitudes.”
-Coach GRANT TAYLOR
One look at me, and you know I'm an ACTION-movie "guy flick" junkie. It's one of the few ways I actually match the steriotype my outward appearance conjures up, and I don't apologize for that. Even though I prioritize spiritual messages and themes in my selection of worthwhile must see movies, there's nothing else like some well-made physical mayhem - as long as it's all make-believe.
Thus, on the secular side, I have an action-movie lineup that serves as my "saturation therapy" for life's injustices. My favorites all share one common aspect: main characters forced across the proverbial line by attacks on their family.
I "innoculate" myself watching guys (with NO super-powers) quit themselves like REAL men and mete out justice for the harm done to their families in movies like:
(My all-time favorite:)"But you know, success can test one's mettle as surely as the strongest adversary."
-MAKO
"Are you not entertained?
Are you not entertained?
Is this not why you are here?"

-MAXIMUS
"Yer mother been tellin ya stories about me again?"
-CAMPBELL
"Honor is the gift a man gives HIMSELF. It cannot be taken from you, only surrendered."
-ROBERT ROY MacGregor
"Oh make no mistake, it’s not REVENGE he’s after—It’s a reckoning."
-JOHN HENRY "Doc" HOLLIDAY
"It's not who I am underneath, but what I DO that defines me."
-BATMAN
"Sic vis pacem parabellum - If you want peace, prepare for war." -FRANK CASTLE
"See, I tried to walk the line, but now I realize there IS no line. Now we here, we are playin' on a level that most will never see."
-Sheriff JOHN QUINCY WYDELL
”You should not drink and bake!”
-MARK KAMINSKY (aka Joseph P. Brenner)
I'd be remiss here if I didn't give mad props to the original, 1975 version of a film that depicted a fictitious sport I'd seriously like to have played myself.
This was also the very first motion picture to give onscreen credit to it's many hardworking stuntmen (before this, all film stunts had been performed anonymously. Having been a stunt performer myself, I consider this a milestone moment for the industry):
"You can't make me quit."
-JONATHAN E.
Oh, and speaking of STUNTS:
"It's moments like these when you know Johnny Knoxville is one gnarly dude."
-STEVE-O
I'm ALSO an old-school ANIMATION BUFF -but can't stand anime. As an illustrator, I studied the techniques of the original Disney animators -the painstaking hand-rendered cel-by-cel production they pioneered- and planned to go into animation myself, just out of High School.
I later became a big fan of former Disney animator Don Bluth, and also Ralph Bakshi -who began presenting fantasy and more adult themes. Both animators pioneered massive rotoscoping, and foreshadowed the CGI techniques so common today.
"If you're gonna kill the Ice Lord, boy, you better learn to live with PAIN."
-DARKWOLF
Some OTHER fun movies I've enjoyed -STILL enjoy- through the years may not be the award-winning quality stuff one boasts of watching (and, lets face it, includes some truly BAD cinema), but are cult classics in their own right. Your life might prove duller and less inspired if you miss out on these:
"I ain't got TIME to bleed."
-BLAIN
"If I die, it will fall upon YOU to avenge me...Do you understand, Talon?
-King RICHARD
"You see, Adso... the step between ecstatic vision and sinful frenzy... is all too brief."-WILLIAM of Baskerville
"Right behind you, I see the millions.
On you, I see the glory.
From you, I get opinions.
From you, I get the story."

-TOMMY
"It's a sweater! ...What can you say about such men?"
-EL GUAPO
"We really shook the pillars of Heaven, didn't we Wang?"
-JACK BURTON
"Gentlemen... We're HISTORY."
-RUFUS
"My User has information that could make this a FREE system again!"
-TRON
"I THINK, therefore I AM..."
-BOMB 20
"I find your lack of faith disturbing."
-DARTH VADER

Television:

"...I fail to understand why I should care to induce my MOTHER to purchase falsified patents."
-Cmdr SPOCK
"I'm not gonna ask TWICE, cos the second time I'll use my size 12!"
-PAUL TEUTUL SR.
”And that’s why it’s good to be… ME.”
-GENE SIMMONS
"I'm sorry for whatever happend that made you stop believing, but it's all REAL!"
-DESMOND DAVID HUME
"You know, they can never tell if I know what I'm doing or not. Every once in awhile, just to keep them guessing, I stick a cigar in my ear."
-DENNY CRANE
-also:
“It's all about having confidence in yourself, I don't fear that man standing across from me”.
-KEN SHAMROCK
"If you get it on tape, you could get it in cash."
-TOM BERGERON
"Where there's smoke, there's Steven Raichlen."
—USA Today
"Let's get it ON!"
-HULK "Terry" HOGAN
I'm not real big on television though -I'm more of a MOVIE kinda guy- as it's hard to tolerate most of the junk out there right now. (I refuse to feed too much TV garbage into my mind & spirit.) That's why my family and I rely on trustworthy programming:
As for those shows from the secular networks that DO make the cut and are allowed into my home, nothing beats having a whole season -ready to be viewed at will- in my collection. The lion's share of input the television in my living room gets is most often from a lovely little silvery disk called

Books:

The bulk of my reading keeps me up to date, politically savvy, culturally literate, and covers personal spiritual development and improvement.
Concerning current events, I favor the objectivity of the political right, as it's increasingly difficult (at my age) to squirm through the misinformation -and outright lies- of left wing authors and their willing accomplices in the dominant liberal media.
Of course, some of the BEST reading is just for fun:
"I'm learning REAL skills that I can apply throughout the rest of my life ... Procrastinating and rationalizing."
-CALVIN
I also enjoy fiction and classic literature, and I read about 3 things at a time (including my Bible, of course), and have massive megatudes of books with not nearly enough shelves for them (and too little space here to even cover my frequent re-reads)!
My all-time favorite authors are:
"I'm here, I'm NOT queer, and I'm not going away!"
-ANN COULTER

Heroes:

Does MAGICAL TREVOR count?
(But SERIOUSLY folks,)
The people of the AMERICAN CENTER for LAW and JUSTICE who tirelessly fight to preserve the America the ACLU has been steadily stripping away:
"If anyone tells you that you cannot legislate morality, remeber that legislation IS morality.”
-JAY SEKULOW
The 40th PRESIDENT of The United States of America:
"No arsenal ... is so formidable as the will and moral courage of FREE men and women."
-RONALD REAGAN
The TEXAS RANGERS:
"No man in the wrong can stand against a fellow in the RIGHT who keeps on a-comin."
-William Jesse "BIG JESS" McDonald
ALL of us in the radio industry owe homage and heritage to the one and only
WOLFMAN JACK:
"We are put on this earth to have a good time. This makes OTHER people feel good. And the cycle continues."
-WOLFMAN JACK
(Robert Weston Smith)
EVERY native San Antonian -who was in elementary school in the late sixties & early seventies- remembers the late great
CAPTAIN GUS:
"Remember to mind your manners, and do what your mommy and daddy tells you to!"
-CAPTAIN GUS
(Joel Austin)
...and being a true native Texan as well, I'm in perpetual awe of the genuine history-changing selfless sacrifice made by that little band of freedom loving individuals known unto us as:
THE DEFENDERS OF THE ALAMO
“Fellow citizens and compatriots – I am besieged by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna. I have sustained a continual bombardment and cannonade for 24 hours and have not lost a man.
I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of liberty, of patriotism and everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid with all dispatch.
If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible and die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor and that of his country. Victory or Death !!!”

-COLONEL WILLIAM BARRET TRAVIS (February 24, 1836. The Alamo)
My greatest LIVING heroes though, on a personal level (and BESIDES my Lord and Savior JESUS CHRIST), are -first and foremost- my family, especially my amazing WIFE:
(Isn't she gorgeous?)
and our brilliant & TOUGH children! I love EACH OF YOU so much!
With what we're being put through -these past four years now- I can't help but BE STILL and BE STRONG for you. (You are ALL my inspiration here on earth!)
I especially admire my youngest daughter (below). WOW. Talk about a serious, responsible woman. She's flourished and become WISE, resilient, and self-reliant in SPITE of everything. And did I mention that she's already the Gym Operations Manager at one of my favoritest places of all?:
And everyone knows I'd consider ANYONE a "hero" who gets through to my oldest daughter (pictured below, with husband) and convinces her to maybe give her MOM a phone call someday soon!
(I mean, REALLY. It's been over FOUR YEARS!)
"...Is there a dagger such as THIS in her hand, for ME?"
-KING OSRIC
...And, finally, a special shout-out to our HEROES over at APPLE. -VIVA la MACINTOSH!
