DOPE MUSIC HISTORY FACTOID!

Ike Turner is credited with the first rock&roll song ever recorded, "Rocket 88." Years before that day in 1951, rhythm&blues had been evolving and many records came out with a hard, uptempo boogie-woogie piano and other similarities to Turner's "Rocket 88," but for one distinction - the night before, as Turner drove to the studio, his amp fell off his car and was damaged - resulting in (the now INDISPENSABLE) distortion!!!!

I've come up with a term for my preferred type of comedy: 'Sentimentalist Sarcasm' - in response to the styles of Denis Leary, Janeane Garofalo, and others we have adored, all the way through the Seinfeld era - a sort of post-sarcasm, with such shining reps as Jon Stewart and Tina Fey...They've shown us you don't have to be a cynic to be a smart-ass!
a related quote:
"Even many of the smartest among us seem to have lost their vision. Cynicism has become a supreme sign of intelligence. Compulsive skepticism masquerades as perceptiveness. Mean-spirited irony is chic. Beautiful truths are suspect and ugly truths are popular....Love desperately needs your imagination. As psychologist James Hillman says, 'For a relationship to stay alive, love alone is not enough. Without imagination, love stales into sentiment, duty, and boredom. Intimacy fails not because we have stopped loving but because we first stopped imagining.'...
"Too many of our brothers and sisters... have been cruelly fooled into acting as if their deepest desires are impossible lies. As a result they live incoherent lives corroded by chronic anxiety."
~ Rob Brezny

Below, a twilight snippet of carnaval 2008 in Salvador, Bahia(i missed it)- right in my old neighborhood... my favorite group TIMBALADA, as their truck hugs a hill around a seaside curve
And here's what it's like in the mix - insanity. (btw, sound quality is excellent in person!) This is actually the same crowd, a couple of hours earlier. It gets a little blurry when the camera person can't resist participating in the rhythmic stampede as dictated by the traditional fanfare you're hearing, which is more than a hundred years old. We used to stay in that white building you see on the right. FUN!
if you can't get enough here's a highlight reel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZB-LnSBAxR4

"Society is the biggest competitor for Hollywood, for the music industry, for the publishing industry. So you have this new competitor that is, 'everyone else.' So the law has been consistently changed, in the past, say, 12 years, in order to protect certain very specific interests-- specially for the North-American cultural industry-- in order to prevent society from becoming the producer of culture, in itself, and for itself."
Ronaldo Lemos, Brazilian Law Prof.
"57% of teenagers have created and shared content on the internet..not file-sharing... people actually creating material and making it available.
"To us, the couch potato generation, this is bizarre, can't imagine doing that, but to them, it's the natural way for them to understand the world and create. Now, you can either call them criminals, call them pirates, and use all the tools of the law and technology to block them from this creativity; or, we can begin to encourage them, by making a wide range of material available, [that gives] them a much better understanding of their past, and a much better opportunity to say something about the future."
Lawrence Lessig, pioneer of Creative Commons, an alternative licensing approach
~ both from the documentary "Good Copy, Bad Copy" about piracy and copyright laws. Very interesting!

My Interests

"...life's wrenching insistence on cramming delight&loss into every single perception..."
Rob Brezny

"The most important and enjoyable thing in life is doing something that’s a complicated, tricky problem that you don’t know how to solve."
William Vollman

I'd like to meet:

YOU...that is... if you make music, or movies and DEFINITELY if you make movies about music. Or if you really got something to say I mean please bring it

"If all you've got is a hammer, all your problems look like nails."

Music:

CORDEL DO FOGO ENCANTADO

most of these songs really are worth listening to past the halfpoint...like Ghostface is allll over that Amy track! it's his song now! and Meth's verse comes in late on the Mary track. Lil Wayne is full of surprises! Very well done, I must say. And for those who don't know Richard Pryor's routine, just wait til he talks about the dog!
(Imagine that, entertainment that keeps on giving past 1.5 mins! I guess not everyone has A.D.D.!)

Big Poppa you ALL that!

aaaahahahahahahaha yes yes. high school. S-T-period-I-D-E...

CAETANO VELOSO

I was there

HIP HOP LIVES
artist: "Obrafour"

in Ghana, they call this HIP-LIFE highlife + hip-hop!

Hip Hop Favorite Quotes

He says what we were all thinking:
"Just consider the unparallelled advantage of a Natural disaster that's impossible to manage"
theGZAgenius

or how bout this one, can you place it?
"Egomaniacs control the self-righteous..."

and besides that - afropopSAMBAreggaesalsafolk... I love good lyrics like Carly Simon and Fiona Apple and Chico Buarque is GOD! he is still alive and entire college courses are taught on his lyrics... at heart I'm really just a nondenominational GrooveRider ...meaning i worship cyclical, linear, groovy basslines (which can be played by any of the instruments)

Movies:

ok and yeah Labyrinth was genius!! but it's not my FAVORITE movie...
I like my movies Lyrical like Life Aquatic; Beautiful like Torturro,Scorcese, Soderbergh; Clever like Quentin; Stories like XMen and Batman Begins and yes, Death to Smoochy; solid acting and believable dialogue are always an unexpected treat, am i right?

Television:

remember 123four - five - 678nine - ten - ELEVENTWELVE!... DVR whut!!... So You Think You Can Dance (hell yeah, dance+tv is a wayyyy better match than American Idol), Simpsons of course, Jon Stewart, Weeds, CSI (VEGAS ONLY)...SouthParkFamilyGuy Saturday Night Live!

I'm sick of people thinking it's the move to hate on TV. Let's distinguish the medium from the content. You are as stupid as people who hated on novels, poetry, dancing, jazz, and videogames...all these things have been accused of "corrupting the mind" and "making us zombies." Can't you think for yourself?? -- However, beware: Falling asleep while watching tv can be VERY DANGEROUS! Your brain is passing through brainwave states used in hypnotism and brainwashing. Just think how vulnerable you are to COMMERCIALS!!!

Books:

Poetry (esp from the Romance period...but also more concise, or simple, even silly like Ogden Nash& who doesn't love Shel Silverstein??) ...just as long as you don't force the rhyme!!...Roald Dahl (children and adult)...Dan Brown is pretty talented...and scripture

Heroes:

Dave Chappelle...some of my closest friends. And seriously
I don't think Albert Einstein has ever said something I don't agree with!! he really GOT IT man
