Cindy Kalmenson is an original voice in Nashville, weaving deep sentiments with honesty and humor. Inspired and influenced by her favorite artists - Joni Mitchell, Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, Neil Young, Joan Baez and Emmylou Harris to name a few - Cindy has developed a unique and heart felt sound very much her own.
Before moving to Nashville in 1996, Cindy lived in Santa Monica and Santa Cruz, Ca. where she taught bilingual education and high school Spanish for eight years. In addition to being a full time teacher, Cindy performed in many community theater productions. After moving back to her native LA from Santa Cruz to pursue acting, she quickly discovered that she could be on stage any night of the week at the many open mic nights all around the city, with one catch - you must write your own songs. So that's when the songwriting began, as a way to get back on stage, this time with guitar in hand. After a couple years playing the coffeehouse circuit in LA, she put herself to the test. In 1996, she packed her car and made the move to Nashville, determined to record an album of her own songs. Two years later, her debut CD "Let Me Out Here" was completed.
Well, that was just the beginning. She began booking herself and touring all around the country to promote her new CD. She quickly sold out of her CD's and is now on her third pressing. After a few years, she had enough material to make a follow-up CD. Four years after completing her first CD, her latest, "Witness", co-produced by Jon Randall, is also complete.
A true indie girl at heart, she has been booking, promoting and touring since 1997. One look at her website and you will see the miles she has driven just so she can sing and play her sometimes funny, sometimes sad, sometimes high energy and sometimes tear jerking songs. With her gypsy spirit and her sense of adventure, she is living her dream: performing, traveling, writing, singing and playing music.
Writing straight from the heart and spiced with a sense of humor, her soulful voice and clever songs are expertly complemented by the best of Nashville's musicians."Let Me Out Here", on her own Big Gack Records, complete with 12 songs, 11 original, and one in Spanish by Juan Luis Guerra, spans 8 years of song writing and experiences. The magical cast of musicians orchestrated by Sullivan, features Darrell Scott on guitar, mandolin, dobro, accordion and pedal steel. Allison Prestwood and Mark Prentice on bass and Tom Roady on Percussion. But to see her live you witness the charm of a true artist born to be on stage.
"Witness", coproduced by Jon Randall (Nash Ramblers, Sam Bush Band) is her most recent accomplishment. Again, she had the great fortune of working with the best of Nashville's musicians - with Jon Randall on guitar, mandolin; Pat Bergeson on guitar and harmonica; Brent Truitt on mandolin; Dave Pomeroy on bass; Larry Atamanuik on percussion and drums; Al Perkins on pedal steel; Rob Ickes on dobro and Stuart Duncan on fiddle. The album was mixed in New York by Ben Wisch (Patty Larkin, Jonatha Brook, Richard Shindell, Lucy Kaplansky, to name a few). But to see her live you witness the charm of a true artist born to be on stage.
Cindy is also the founder and host of the very successful show she created called "Girls with Guitars", now in its eighth year, showcasing some of the finest singer-songwriters in Nashville and visiting touring artists. The show is held the 3rd Wednesday of the month at Douglas Corner.
