About Me

Eligible, not too stupid, intelligible, and cute as Cupid; knowledgeable, but not always right, salvageable, and free for the night.

My Interests

Life, the Universe, and Everything.

I'd like to meet:

People who don't believe a word I say.

Music:

All of the folks to the right, plus:

Old stuff: The Smiths, Cocteau Twins, Captain Beefheart, Joy Division, Throwing Muses, Velvet Underground, The Pixies, Sonic Youth, Beach Boys (but only Pet Sounds), Half Man Half Biscuit, My Bloody Valentine, The Ramones, Pavement.

Hard stuff: Shellac, Big Black, Fugazi, Slint.

Beats: A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, De La Soul, Jeru the Damaja, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Jurassic 5, The Pharcyde, KRS-One, Lootpack, Outkast, Missy Elliott, Main Source, People Under the Stairs, Eric B & Rakim, Roots Manuva, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Nas ('Illmatic'), The Creators, Ugly Duckling, Dilated Peoples, Reflection Eternal, All Natural, Kanye West.

Singers: Nick Drake, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Jonathan Richman, Rufus Wainwright, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Smog, Morrissey, Richard Hawley.

Electronic/etc: Cougar, Hot Chip, Kraftwerk, Minotaur Shock, Plaid, Boards of Canada, Tortoise, Prefuse 73, Push Button Objects, Mr Scruff, Aerial M, Air, Royksopp, DJ Shadow.

Everything else: Beirut, Lily Allen, Kings of Leon, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sufjan Stevens, Stereolab, Beck, the mighty Fall, Flaming Lips, Broadcast, the Delgados, Badly Drawn Boy, Astrud Gilberto, Chet Baker, Django Reinhart, Duke Ellington, The Shins, Mogwai, Magnetic Fields, Sigur Ros, Interpol, Cat Power, Kings of Convenience, Mazzy Star/Hope Sandoval, Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Palace Brothers (but not so much Will Oldham - he's too moany on his own!), Silver Jews, Saint Etienne, PJ Harvey, Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, New Order.

Movies:

I can never remember the plot or endings of movies. I don't know why; I have a really good memory for everything else. Some films that have made an impression: Don't Look Now (scariest movie ever!), Pirates of the Caribbean, Dumb and Dumber, Sideways, Down By Law, Dog Day Afternoon, Carlito's Way. Also love 50s sci-fi B movies, (older) Woody Allen films, Buster Keaton, Marx Brothers, Laurel & Hardy, and 1980s teen movies. Can you tell I'm very high-brow?

Television:

Lost, Doctor Who, Days of Our Lives (the best soap opera ever!).

Books:

Douglas Adams, Flann O'Brien, Mr Beckett, Mr Wilde, Saki (he doesn't appear to have a first name), Mr Dostoyevsky, WG Sebald's 'Austerlitz' - the best book i have read in ages.

Dubious battle

I have of late been a bit quiet in my ongoing war against the customer service axis of evil (apart from my recent suggestion that all "retail assistants" be replaced by robots). But you'll be glad to ...

Sad robots

There's only two programmes I watch on TV - 'Lost' and 'Doctor Who'. Two out of the last three episodes of 'Doctor Who' have had me close to tears (but that could be just because I'm ridiculously susc...

A painful note

One of the books I'm reading at the moment is the classic yoga philosophy text, "Patanjali's Yoga Sutras(/Aphorisms)". The explanatory text has an interesting note about pain and suffering that I'd li...
