About Me

Bla bla bla gazillions of bands on my space... bla bla bla... Click on a tune, wait ten seconds. Continue if desired. Repeat if necessary. John Mick likes to sing about social issues. He also reserves the right to "yeah, yeah, baby, baby" lyrics. Usually in the same song. What good is social consciousness without the baby baby, anyway? If you would like to see some great photos of local rock and roll bands, check out Lashing Out Hilariously. If you're looking for independent music of all kinds, a lot of it local, most of it Canadian, give a listen to "www.olivesbrain.gotdns.com", mixed up by a guy named Brad (see my top 8...) Independent artists on internet radio. It's great to hear everything mixed together, by a guy who does NOT get handed a computerized playlist. Thank you to any DJ's who DO play indie musicians. I know a DJ is responsible to the station, and those DJ's that do stick their neck out and play indie talent do so for the love of music!A quick note here: I have stumbled over some great songs and talented people on myspace, and I recommend the following bands/songs, findable in my "friends" section... here they are, in order of popping into my head...1) Sarah Jaffe and/or Tomahawk Molly - any song really. Buy her stuff from Baby Hurricane Records and get some free downloads on Sarah's page while they last! 2) Sleepy Driver - "Ring The Black Bell" - roots rock, a toe tapper, darkly put. Downloadable! 3) Joanna- "Fat Face" - lyrically interesting, nice voice, something different. Downloadable! 4) Scott MacDonald - "I'll Leave Tomorrow" - this guy makes the coolest sounds with guitars, any instrument, really. Downloadable! 5) E.I. - "Punk Rock Band" - heard this one, thought 'well that was cool', forgot all about it, and proceeded to sing it to myself for the next two days until I downloaded it. Downloadable! 6) Spaceblood - "Drinking 7 Days A Week" - see the write up above. I appear to be a closet punk fan. Downloadable! 7) Ker - "These Familiar Things" - shifting down gears, I was caught by this pretty sound on the second listen. Relaxes and refreshes. Downloadable! 8) Ryan Lamey - "95" - a beautiful voice. You may find yourself playing air piano to this one. Not that I did. I'm far too cool for that. Downloadable! 9) Chris Colepaugh and the Cosmic Crew - all four songs up on the site. He gets played on the radio, but don't be an indie snob and hold that against him. He and his cosmic crew are real rockers. Plus, he wrote me back. And for a limited time only... Downloadable! 10) Jonathan Baker - "Ode To Dudley" - largely instrumental, humorous, this song passed the litmus test of me ending up singing it, albeit briefly... "Dudley!" Downloadable! 11) The Superfantastics - "Impossible Pineapple Part II" - I don't know why. It grabbed me. I cannot grab it back, however, as it is not downloadable. 12) Fraser - "I Won't Spread For No Roses" - better dead than spread. Downloadable. 13) Secondhand Smoke Machines - "The Lab" - good clean rock and roll, with what I can only assume and hope is a filthy message. 'having too much pleasure, whenever she's in leather...' Downloadable! 14) Inoke Errati (I Know Karate) - "Standards" - a guitar lick that FORCES you to have fun. Not downloadable... 15) Porkchop Sandwiches! Porkchop Sandwiches! - "Creative Truth" - ever wonder what a punk love song sounds like? I really should have put this song near the top of the list, but as previously stated, these are in the order they occur to me, not some absurd subjective ranking. "She said she loved me last night... ohwoahoh!" Downloadable! In the same mention, I will include Thelema as they share some band members with the PCS! and have a great sound! 16) Paper and Airplanes - "Secrets" - Caught myself singing it, therefore, I must list it. 17) Camera Obscura - "Hey Lloyd" - "Hey Lloyd, I'm ready to be heart broken..." if I had a nickle for everytime I've said that. Someone who is cool showed me this Scots group. No longer downloadable, keep an eye on their page... 18) The Trick - "Digital Lullabye" - Whatever happened to all our heroes? Pop/Electronica. Not downloadable. 19) Crosstown Rivals - "Wellington Street" - I did end up singing this one. A rocker... cathartic... what other big words can I use here... Downloadable! 20) Windom Earle - "Kitten Vs. Pegasus" - A song that made me want to dance, and it is... Downloadable! 21) Chris Pureka - "Porch Songs" - great voice, sit on the porch with Chris and pretend to be a rock star! Not downloadable... 22) Sarah Jaffe - I know, I know, listed her already, but I'm currently being haunted by the song "Swelling." Caution, this song will make you remember being hopelessly in love. DOWNLOADABLE! 23) Vetch - "Thumbelina." Just plain fascinating. Downloadable. 24) The Divorcees - "Hardluck SOB" - I'm a hard luck... son of a bitch, with the mean old bastard blues. Beat that for a lyric. You just cain't. And as long as you're gittin' yer outlaw country on, check out Darcy Mazerolle - Go ahead. "Breathe some whisky fumes". 25) The Bandejos - Rockabilly, anyone? One of the best things out of Moncton since Detroit Velvet Smoove. "Badass Headcase Blues" - Cocaine, Cubans and American Cash, Champagne and Heineken and Lebanese Hash... interested? 26) Nathan Rogers - "The Ballad of Billy and John Gibson." Ah hell. Any song at all. This one has a fiddle that really cooks, however. 27) Popup are (is?)(be? Well perhaps only in pirate-speak) amazing. They fill me with joy. Yes, that's right, drill Corporal, they fill me with joy. Even if you do make me march hup and down the square. Oh, and if you are still reading, and haven't caught on yet, I am trying to suck you in to entertain yourself, while my songs are playing in the background, sinking deeper into your subconscious... until you one day believe it is fair to go to a John Mick show and shell out $120... that's right, just keep reading the witticisms... keep reading... keep reading... Just listened to the radio in my car, and realized I would rather listen to most of the songs I mentioned, than the same old stuff AGAIN AND AGAIN... Get your stuff on "www.olivesbrain.gotdns.com" so we can all hear it! This list will grow as I wast... spend more time researching my fellow musicians... For now, I can only hope that the talking happy face ad that yells out "Helloooo!" will soon be removed from MySpace. It makes my dogs bark. Every time. Seriously. Every single time. Motherf*%k.
