The Biography
"...he builds and breaks with no mistakes."
- URB Magazine, 1994.
________________________________ ________________________________
The name is William "Bill" Tanksley IV, as anyone with sense can find on the 'net... but here, he is a.k.a.
"DJ Mr. Bill".
He honestly got the name by a random radio-show caller... Bill gave listeners 2 hours to name his show, and some guy he probably would never meet said "Hey, dude, you should - like... *puffing sound*... call it The Mr. Bill Show"... so it stuck.
The year was 1988.
Bill truly is one of the "old-school" DJ's that grew up to the sound of an electro beat -- only the scene is sadly not what it was once before. He's been spinning records since 1988, and works with WQFS-FM 90.9 and WUAG-FM 103.1 in North Carolina. Despite a heavy interest in Broadcasting and Communications, he received his major in Political Science at The University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
In terms of music, while Bill truly loves his time on the radio, it's always playing out for the public that really means the most.
Quite recently, he was honored to play with the Grammy-nominated artist Moby in New York... at the release party for "Go - the very best of Moby".
A few other of the "bigger names" include Deee-Lite, Rabbit In The Moon, Dieselboy, DJ Dan, Doc Martin, DJ Icey, Nine Inch Nails, Dajae, Scott Henry, + Rhythm Section (UK) .Also, He has been on the road with Information Society, and done radio interviews with MC 900 Foot Jesus, The Veldt, Consolidated, Fishbone, Meat Beat Manifesto, KMFDM, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, Jesus Jones, Skinny Puppy, Nitzer Ebb, 808 State, Lush, Ride, and many more... not to be bragging, just that Bill has been lucky.
DJ Mr. Bill has been lucky enough to DJ at clubs and coliseums around the country, muddy airport runways, and once even at a nuclear power plant! Oh yes indeed.
In addition to various travels including the "Soma" district of San Francisco, New York, Washington DC, and even an offer at the "Club Radost" in Prague, Bill has mainly kept to his Southeastern roots.
Past "residencys" include Babylon, The Fallout Shelter, Bourbon Street, The Power Company, Mythos, Infiniti, Hellenbach, The Edge, The Trim Shop, The Orchestra Pit, Tuscana, WQFS-FM, WUAG-FM, and countless "Paris parties" that the old-timers in Greensboro know far too much about...
We'll just save that for a future Blog! Promise!
Lastly, you may/may not be familiar with countless mixes that have been released over the years. The most prominent ones include "High Time", "Reunion 2006 (live in Raleigh)", "San Francisco - Labor of Love at Universe - Labor Day Weekend '97", "Let Love Shine", and the hard-to-forget "Girls Pee-Pee When They See Me" (volumes 1+2). Not to mention the countless "live" tapes that always seem to circulate from both live gigs and radio shows...
Bill currently resides in Greensboro, along with his cats "Luna" and "Sole" (Italian for moon and sun). As for his love life: "...I'm single, still looking, and I'll know her when I see her. That biological clock in my heart just keeps ticking... but seriously, I'm feeling the need to settle down someday soon."
Bill is currently a Resident DJ at WUAG 103.1 FM and WQFS 90.9 FM .
