ANATOMIST

hoping for the 'happy finish'

About Me

ANATOMIST (Neil) has been writing and performing his own brand of distorted breakdub and sprained melodies since the late 90s.
November 2006 brought the long-awaited follow-up to ANATOMIST's 2004 Material Witness EP and debut album, Violence Is Its own Reward .
The brand new tracks on In Fading Light see the varied style of that earlier album reach full maturity, with spectacular results. Where Violence delighted in switching genre and style, these new tracks sit effort- lessly in their own space, defining ANATOMIST's unique sound.
Over five tracks and more than half an hour's listening, trademark floor-shaking basslines, stripped down post-breakbeat rhythms, a hint of the new London sound - this new material establishes acts from Highpoint Lowlife such as Bovaflux and RandomNumber as kindred spirits - all emerge with a rare consistency of vision. Here's one to watch.
All of ANATOMIST'S releases are available to buy on bleep.com or can be previewed in full at last.fm
A new EP is due for digital release later this year - Dirt Famous (previews on the mysppace player above) and more tracks in the pipeline...
Neil has also released material as METAHEAD (with techno DJ Paul Scheeres) on the ' Dim Apathi/No Apathy ' compilation (Honk: Album of the Month, 'the cutting edge of the scene' | Western Mail: 'plenty to amuse and intrigue' | Buzz Magazine: 'untapped mine of quality music'), has created dark soundtracks for the performance ensemble 'Infernal Triangle' at the ICA, London and has composed the soundtracks for several short films including 'Yo Yo Bubblegum' and 'Trailerpark'.
He does not mention the aerobics video soundtrack.

REVIEWS FOR MATERIAL WITNESS EP
RADIO 1: 'It says here that South Wales electro-funk producer Anatomist has been shaping sine waves and tweaking filters on the cutting-edge of the electronica underground since the late-'90s, which would explain why his half of a new split album on Cardiffs Machine Records sounds so accomplished: a collection of tracks with the propulsive, bouncy energy of big beat, but the crunchy digital edge sported by pretty much any experimental electronica act worth their salt. Catch him live playing at Machine Records' monthly residency at Journeys in Clifton Street, Cardiff.'

BUZZ MAGAZINE: 'More quality budget bass'n' breaks from Cardiff's number one underground electronics imprint. Superimpozer, from London, and Cardiff's Anatomist get six and five tracks respectively on their split CD, and make good with their edgy ambience, clatterbeat drum damage and homebaked techno. Superimpozer, especially, is a talent worthy of investigation by more labels, and soon.'

SMALLFISH RECORDS "machine.records are turning out to be a very interesting little label indeed. This SPLIT EP from the two named artists starts off deep, dark, beaty and electronic and soon becomes a more twisted, manipulated sound over the course of the CD. Crispy rhythms and crunchy noises are the order of the day. Anyone into SCHEMATIC etc. should definitely check these releases out."

REVIEWS FOR VIOLENCE IS ITS OWN REWARD
machine.records tenth release, Violence Is Its Own Reward, is the debut album from Cardiffs Anatomist, previously heard on the 5-track Material Witness EP released in February of this year. With 12 new tracks clocking in at almost 80 minutes, Violence Is Its Own Reward juxtaposes twisted breakfunk and decaying digital melodies to reveal a unique, cut-throat sound. Anatomists schizophrenic approach to leftfield electronica by turns wistfully melodic and abrasive reflects diverse influences ranging from the blues/soul singer Ted Hawkins to the sound-mangling techno of Surgeon and a misspent youth at 80s acid house raves.
