Sonja Markowski, a singer/songwriter from Berlin (Germany), moved to Holland in 1994 to study singing at the Rotterdam Conservatory. She always loved Janis Joplin's strong voice, Chet Baker's soft songs, Willie Nelson's guitar, Jeff Buckley's weird lyrics, Carole King's immortal compositions, Bono's glasses, Johnny Cash's suit and Sheryl Crow's Californian look.
Even though Sonja worked as a professional singer in different bands for almost ten years, it’s only two years ago that she decided to really follow her heart. She quit her job and started to perform her 'rootsy pop songs with country flavor' on a regular base. Sonja whispers softly, sings with the strong, expressive voice of a rock chick and touches your heart, effortless. Her lyrics paint pictures you will remember.
Jan van Bijnen is her 'musical soulmate'. With the edgy sound of a dobro, a crispy guitar, dreamy pedal steel and the tender sound of a mandolin he’s got exactly what the songs need.
Markowski won the ‘Grand Prize Of South Holland 2006’ and recorded the EP ‘Porcupine’s Sister’, which got great reviews. The EP is available on cdbaby.com and on iTunes! The song ‘Storm’ was selected by the 'Popunie' for their 2007 compilation-cd.
Markowski played ten shows in the US last summer, drove 11.000 kilometers and absorbed enogh inspiration for the first full cd, which will be released in 2008.
