Jeanette's gone to Florida and Puerto Rico!

The young are not my rivals. Fish are not the rivals of stones. Margaret Atwood

About Me

"I would rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck." Emma Goldman

I'm a nice person. Mostly.*

I like many things. I do many things. I know many things. You do not want to go up against me in trivia games.

I'm well read, decently educated and very interested in the world and most of what it has to offer. I go into a fair amount of detail in the sidebars 'cause that is what they are here for, right?

I am not scary. Intense, perhaps. I would speak to you of my shyness but you would not believe me. No one ever does.

(*If you earn my dark and nasty side, don't say you were not warned. Like all nice people, I am scary as fuck when I get cranky.)

My Interests

Travel, art, fashion, life, naps, strong breezes, politics, friends, family, books, music, storms and rainy weather, weird ass shit, outsider art, roadside attractions, skulls, nature (in all the glory we have not managed to destroy), clouds, strange things, rock crystal, antiques, flea markets, thieves markets, demantoid garnets, fire opals, graffiti, sex and fucking, adventures, mail art, single malt scotch, Belgian beers (esp. Maredsous), 1000 journals, great tattoos, collecting, thrift stores, collage, mystical beasties, silk sheets and feather blankets, Marines, museums, vintage cars, the human race, reconciling my love for the individual to my general dislike of the overall mass that is humanity, the future and the past.

Feh. I am interested in every damn thing. I don't like bigots, the willfully unintelligent, the cruel, the uninvolved and the dispassionate. The world is painful but you still have to participate.

I also like good causes, noble deeds and struggling for good.I also like Architeuthis!.. width="425" height="350">.. .. ....>And space.

I'd like to meet:

Short answer?

Interesting and amusing people. All ages, genders and persuasions welcome. I have no time for flame wars or anonymous trolls. Go fuck around with someone else and leave this area for the adults.

I'm always in the mood for banter and chit chat. I get better the longer I know you and the more I like you. Put some effort in to it and I'll try to do the same.

---------------------------------------------------------- Incredibly long and probably overly complicated answer that most people will not read?

I'm very lucky with the friends I've got and that makes me selective. I'll add you here cause that really doesn't mean much but it will take a lot of witty banter and chit chat to hang out in real space. I've got no real moral problem with being part of your cyber harem but real life contact is another thing entirely.

I realize increasingly that most people on MS are flaky. For some reason, this kind of contact isn't seen as real or legit. Please don't take this as a challenge to see if you can be intriguing and then disappear once we have become friendly. That's a waste of energy for both of us. Nobody likes a tease. I repeat. NO ONE LIKES A TEASE. I put out.* Do you? (*this does not mean I will fuck you merely because you send me a message. Just sayin')

I know many of the people on my friends list in real space as well. I'm not adverse to meeting new people but am enough of an elitist that I will actually pay attention to your punctuation, spelling and what you say on your interests page. If you're intriguing, I'll add you. If not-please don't take it personally. I like glitter as much as the next girl but I will probably never send you a big blinking thanks for the add. Unless I had a really cool one that was mine and mine alone. I may be too lazy to make a cool one.

A note if you are trying to pick me up here:

I've had thousands of comments in real life about every aspect of my physical self. I won't respond to anything that sounds like it was shouted at me from some fuckwit waiting on the bus. "You want some dick?" will only work if you are actually Chris Rock. You must be able to prove that you are Chris Rock.

I will simply delete your ass if you send me stupid messages and comments. It isn't that hard to be engaging. Well, okay. I take that back. For most people, apparently, it is.

Fuck it. I'm probably too much for you to handle anyway, so just keep moving. Nothing to see here.

"Man loves little and often, woman much and rarely." Giorgio Basta
"I have no respect for anyone who says they've given up, or that they're not looking or that they're tired. That is to abrogate one's responsibility as a human being.” Harlan Ellison on love
Or you could bring me this guy on a platter. Ah, I'm crushing. Nothing better than righteous and articulate political thought.

Music:

All of it. I'm not just saying that. My fave thing is to get people to give me c.d.'s of their faves to find new stuff. Sometimes you need hardcore and sometimes you need Maori chanting. I love live music and can simply listen to it played (well of course) for hours.

Bonus points for lovers of jazz, R&B, funk, blues, punk ... well, gee, how I do go on. Bonus points for knowing all sorts of music and introducing me to new artists and genres.
Mix tapes and burned CD's and even exchanging hard drives make me swoon with happiness.

Somewhat recent shows I have seen? Art Brut, We Are Scientists, Spinto Band, Ladykillers, the Psychonauts, the Toasters, Slayer, Fiona Apple (at Largo), Jon Brion, The Ghastly Ones, The Horrors, Morrisey and a bunch of rockabilly and indy bands whose names escape me ...
Basically, I listen to whatever Jorge tells me to.

Movies:

All movies are good, even the cheeeeesy ones. I like dramas but do not watch them as much because they can really affect me. I love film noir, things with wisecracking dames and anything that has Gary Cooper in it.

I love silent films, weird and obscure things, pre-code movies and films based on Clive Barker stuff. Indian cinema, especially with dancing and silliness, makes me laugh with the sheer goofiness.

Also, almost any good or great cartoons. My faves include classic Warner Brothers. Does anyone know why they won't let me see "Babyface Finster" anymore? I miss that one! Samurai Jack, Venture Brothers, Family Guy ... give me tips on other good ones. If the art sucks, it has to be VERY FUNNY.

Television:

I like it but figure I will watch it when I can do nothing else. Otherwise, I will spend all my free time learning about Marines landing at Tarawa or how to hot glue gun things to other things. I would rather go do something. I mean, don't you think it will all be repeats in 50 years anyway? Oh, I'm sorry. They call it encore presentation now. It's a REPEAT! And it is all encore presentations of encore presentations.

That said, I can probably recite all the Simpsons episodes. Except that sucks now too. I'll be in the corner talking about how things used to be funny in my day.

I also like this thing; hurrah for sarcasim. I found it by accident, when someone spelled sarcasm wrong.

Books:

“I will use big words from time to time, the meanings of which I may only vaguely perceive, in hopes such cupidity will send you scampering to your dictionary: I will call such behavior 'public service'.” Harlan Ellison
I read approximately a book a day. Or I used to. Now my social life, job and the time suck of *73h in73rn37s* may have brought my count down. I read everything. Graphic novels to how to, all kinds of fiction. My living room is a library with about 2,000 books in it. I have read lots of them too. Not the pulps, because I get those because I like the lurid covers.
Faves? Marcus Aurelius, Jane Austen, Clive Barker, George R.R. Martin, Harper Lee, Voltaire, Twain, Swift, Poe, George Sand, Harlan Ellison, Fay Weldon, Sherri Tepper, Isabelle Allende, Dashiel Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Neil Gaiman, Tad Williams, Arturo Perez-Reverte: well, fuck it. I read A LOT.
It would be easier to say I do not read Sheldon, Grisham (except a Painted House), Cartland or anything that tells me about soul soup or where cheese went. Actually, that is not a bit dishonest. I did read everything Sheldon and Grisham wrote and even scanned Cartland as a kid at my grandmother's house. Reading these kind of books helps. It is only by knowing what is not good, that we know what is good. Bonus points for knowing what quote I am referencing there.
I like non-fiction as well, especially travel writing, feminist and women's history, true crime and the histories of things like amusement parks. Truly hot erotica is a bit rarer but I like it as well.
Give me your book tips. Tell me who I should read and why. I'll go get the book and thank you if it affords me pleasure. May I suggest "Try" by Lily Burana? She's my girl but it is also a swell book. See if you can guess which character is based on me!!
I change the quote on my page often, sometimes several times a week, as it suits me.
"It is not right to exult over slain men." Homer

Heroes:

Those who stand up at great cost. James Baldwin, Lucy Stone, Marcus Aurelius, Muhammed Yunus (inventor of microcredit banking), Carl Sagan, Arthur C. Clarke, the unknown and unnamed who have given their unrecognized all to move the human race forward. The thin man standing in front of the tank in Tiamen Square.

"Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery." Malcolm X

Heaven help us. The mush mouthed Bush does it again.

Politics as usual, deleting the worthy political profile while leaving us Tila Tequila.

Today, my friend and awesome local activist K Lovich is rebuilding her profile. It vanished. Mysteriously. I suppose in a land where we can now "legally" be removed from the streets without trial, wit...
