Born on March 26, 1940, in Baltimore, Maryland, Nancy Patricia D’Alesandro Pelosi currently serves as minority leader in the U.S. House of Representatives, the first woman of either party to be elected to lead a major political party in either house of Congress. When the Democrats eventually gain control of the U.S. House, Rep. Pelosi will become the first female to serve as Speaker of the House.The daughter of former congressman and mayor of Baltimore, Thomas D’Alesandro, Nancy attended Trinity College in Washington, D.C., whereupon she met her future husband, Paul Pelosi. After marrying, the couple relocated to Paul’s hometown of San Francisco. After raising the couple’s five children, Nancy became involved in California Democratic Party politics in the 1980s.In 1987, Nancy won a special election to serve as representative to what is now California’s 8th Congressional District. Rep. Pelosi has been re-elected nine times to represent San Francisco’s district, often receiving more than 70 percent of the vote in each election.In 2001, Rep. Pelosi was elected to serve as minority whip in the U.S. House of Representatives. Following the resignation of Rep. Dick Gephardt from the post of minority leader, Pelosi was selected to fill his shoes as the new minority leader in 2002. When the Democrats take control of the House of Representatives in 2006, Rep.
