When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race. - HG Wells

About Me

i'm the fitness and nutrition advisor for beachbody and million dollar body. trying to leave this world in better state than i found it, though i'm not sure if this is going well. work mainly in the fitness and nutrition field, made a couple of films, play a lot of outdoor sports and, with all my extra time, chip away at a phd in sustainable nutrition. when we save ourselves, we save the world, and we seem to have lost this focus in the way we treat each other--and ourselves--in our day to day lives. live your life is if you matter, because you do.

My Interests

helping people get fit. social change. birthday challenges. film. making fun of the spectacle we've created. i ride bikes a lot, climb a lot, run a lot, sometimes compete a lot. other than that, i spend a fair chunk of time writing, reading, studying, and occupying various pubs and coffee houses.

I'd like to meet:

i've got a great circle of friends around the world but, ya know, friends; you can't have too many.i travel a lot, so those that like to get out and do stuff are always welcome additions. especially those who hit the pub, er, i mean climb, ride (anything without a motor), and generally like to push limits but aren't so serious they can't hit to pub afterwards. there, that sounds better. what am i supposed to say? my bike team is sponsored by a pub.

i tend get along with those who embrace and challenge life. we only get one shot at it, as far as we know, so we might as well make the best of it.

as we say at birthday challenge, live your life

and meeting this guy wouldn't suck either.

Music:

pretty eclectic tastes: from mozart, to trance, to 70s soul, to zero 7, to miles davis, to los tigres del norte, international folk music, and in between. pretty much anything but pop except, of course, korki butchek, who is number one recording artist in all of central asia.

Movies:

i'd seen the AFI top 100 list prior to its release, so i guess you could say i'm a film buff.

43 Films That You Must See

note: this article was written before the release of the life aquatic, the finest film of the decade, so far. docs, like why we fight, have led the list over the last couple of years, though layer cake, badasss, and the proposition stand out in the narrative genre.

Television:

if i had TV i'd watch the daily show and the colbert report but my television only gets dvds. tv worth renting seems to all come from hbo: da ali g show, deadwood, firefly, and sex and the city (that's right, buddy. so i watch an occasional chick flick. if my life ever gets to the point that i need to watch UFC to raise my testosterone levels, it'll be time to cash out.)

Books:

fairly well versed in the classics, and always have a few books going. whatever happened to writing like this?

Heroes:

anyone who lives with passion and, more importantly, compassion.

this paul watson speech is long but if you've got 30 minutes it might change your life.inspiring, indeed.

Things Are Startin’ To Stretch

Bagged Yoga today after the first few sun salutations and popped in X Stretch instead. I'm still tired and what I really needed today was a thorough stretching session. It occured to me that I haven't...

Core Synergistics

I generally find this to be one of the more fun workouts in the 90x arsenal but yesterday it destroyed me. This is the sign of a good workout. One that is challenging and fun but still requires you to...

Recovery Week

My second block of P90X has ended with our marriage/housewarming party this weekend. I think just hosting the party was enough to cause overtraining. It's time for a recovery week. In 90X, the "recove...

Overtraining

"This is the most blantant case of overtraining I've ever seen. God, I love it!"- David Brainard, to me, climbing Old San Marcos Pass during '98 Tour simulationYesterday I woke up with my heart racin...

Legs & Back

I think this is my new favorite X workout. I switched my schedule this week so that I could work my legs today and rest them before my big rides this weekend. It's an odd combo from a traditional trai...

No Pain No Gain

This morning I'm extremely sore. It's a good sore--the kind of blissful all over soreness that comes from a big day out. The problem; I had no big day out. The old no pain no gain adage is a misnomer ...

Doubles

While I was concocting the doubles routine for the 90X book Tony asked, somewhat rhetorically, "does it really do you any good to train longer than an hour or so?" He was hesitant about adding a doubl...

Virtual Giro

In spite of my precarious situation I began my virtual Giro yesterday. What this includes is riding each day of the Giro that the riders ride. This means I'll be on my bike each day but two over the n...

Abridged Workouts

While my recovery is going a little slower than I'd hoped the design of the P90X workouts has made it easy to continue with my program. I won't be making the same progress but I'm not sliding backward...

Good Pain vs Bad Pain

With new clients it's generally a challenge teaching them to sort out good pain from bad. Good pain is the type associated with "no pain, no gain," while bad pain is more associated with "no pain, no ...
