The Original Uptown Top Ranking Radio show on KUCI 88.9FM 1997-

About Me

In 1973, my parents took my brother and I to Jamaica for a months stay in a small Villa called "Bleu Haven A" in Ocho Rios. My parents hired a local mento combo, and that was that. I have been hooked on Jamaican music ever since. Thanks to my parents I grew up singing "Jamaica Farewell" Respect to Harry Belafonte. During the 70's my parents brought back some great reggae from many trips to Jamaica, my favorites were Third World- 96 in the Shade and Bob Marley's Natty Dread. In the 80's. I used to tune into a local radio show on KUCI 88.9 with DJ Goldielocks called Rocking Reggae. During that time I also listened to the great KCRW show "the Reggae Beat" show with Roger Steffens and Hank Holmes from LA. One day in 1983, my friend Hugh and I skateboarded over to the KUCI studio and met with DJ Goldielocks. It was my first time at a radio station. And it was like a Mother Ship, Mother Brain. It was then I knew I wanted to be a Reggae DJ. The first Reggae band I ever saw perform live are the local Rebel Rockers right on the UCI campus. 1986 found Hugh and I winning tickets from Goldielocks to see Bunny Wailer play at CSULB, this was a life changing day for me-the first of many large reggae concerts since. I got to hear Ras Michael for the first time as well as Leroy Sibbles and others that day before Bunny played for a three hour set. In High School, I wanted to have a campus radio station, I was told by the headmaster it was impossible at the time, but now many years later my school has a radio station. When I finally able to get in some places to see live reggae, I tried to see as many of the Greats of reggae---a mission I am still trying to accomplish. In 1997, I kept bumping into another Reggae fan, DJ Gregory G at a local record store and he told me he had just started a Reggae show on KUCI called Uptown Top Ranking. I won some tickets for Pato Banton and I went to the studio with Tim to thank Gregory and got to talking. I wound up taking the DJ training course at KUCI and joined Gregory G on air as the Co-host. From 1997-2000 Gregory and I interviewed many of Reggae's Legends to it's latest rising stars. My friend Tim Noble has also played a huge part in the show, designing all of our websites, taking pictures, getting ids, making our T-shirts, a true master behind the scenes. In 1999, 2000 I was the MC for the ASUCI/KUCI Reggaefest, something I resumed in 2006, and this years event the 19th Annual Reggaefest looks good. It is a honor to work on this event. DJ Gregory G left the Show in 2000 to work his "Crucial" sound system in Long Beach and I owe him greatly for making my dream of being a DJ actually happen and become reality. We did as some friends do, stupidly not talking to each other for some time after the split, and after wasting a lot of time, we've become friends again I am happy to say. Gregory today in very active in Long Beach with his sound system. 2000 brought the arrival of DJ King Pablo aka Sean Panigutti, a former WRUV DJ from Vermont who had just started his own Firehouse Rock show on KUCI. Pablo and I hosted Uptown Top Ranking until 2003, when King Pablo went back to hosting his own excellent Firehouse Rock show which is heard on KUCI Fridays 10am-1pm Pacific. In 2004, Tim aka DJ Jah T became the Co-host. In 2001, I worked at the World of Reggae Exhibit at the Queen Mary as the Tour Guide when Roger was not there to show people around himself. This exhibit featured the treasures of Roger Steffens Reggae Archives. I was able to meet many Reggae Artists as well as fans from around the world. This was truly an honor to work there. I have some video of the exhibit under "my videos" for more about Roger, check his website www.reggaesupersite.com Roger continues to be one of my biggest sources of inspiration to spread the message of Reggae music to the massive around the world. From 1999, my biggest supporter, and best friend Teresa aka DJ Angelfish -who has taken many of the photographs on this myspace, made it possible for me to keep the show going for this long and she has worked with me at the Sierra Nevada World Music Festival with me since 2000-2005 working as a volunteer backstage at the Press Tent/Backstage. She has been my ROCK.RAS L and DJ RUDY(ECHO VIBES ENTERTAINMENT) have also appeared on UTR and made nuff Contribution to the show. A full decade of Uptown Top Ranking has been made it KUCI's longest running Reggae Program (SO FAR AT LEAST IN 37 YEARS) and continues to play reggae music from all around the world and sharing the good vibes that make reggae music so perfect for the world. I had the honor of working with Downey,CA based REGGAE NUCLEUS magazine for a few years writing reviews and articles. This was a great experience and I hope one day the magazine will fly again (it was strictly the BEST FREE REGGAE Magazine for So Cal and beyond I've ever seen) I worked on the MGM film Hoodlum doing research (uncredited) with my friend Gilbert Barnhardt, with whom I am working on a new music project called H.O.M.E doing research. I am also working on a book about Bob Marley's live concerts and working on a comedy screenplay.Uptown Top Ranking (the Original UTR) Reggae Radio Show is heard on KUCI 88.9FM in Irvine every Wednesday at 10am-1pm and you can call in and make requests at (949) 824-5824.
