Acoustic World Fusion

About Me

We'd love to play in your living room! For more details on how to host a house concert, click on the banner.
Perpetual Motion began as a violin and guitar duo in 1990. Our first gig was for the Conifer Faire, a small art and antique fair in the mountains of Colorado. Since then our songwriting has evolved from folksy acoustic music to what I like to call "acoustic world fusion". We've added a rhythm section and an electric violin which kicks the energy level up, not that it's sleepy when we play as a duo. All of our music begins with the violin and guitar, and once we have our parts tight we add our marvelous rhythm section, Rob Chamberlin, drums and Blake Eberhard, bass. Since we write all our music like this, we can play for smaller events as a duo, or add bass for a trio, or go all the way with full rhythm section.
Since all our music is instrumental, we like to write music with strong melodies so there's something for the listener to grab a hold of. We chose the name Perpetual Motion because we wanted people to hear the energy that a violin and guitar duo can have. We get people tapping their feet and clapping their hands, sometimes they get up and dance.
We are inspired by everything around us, from people we meet to places we go, nature and animals, music we listen to. It's like we have musical ADD, we jump from one style of music to another. We just can't seem to discipline ourselves, and we write what comes out of our souls. Sometimes it's a latin folky tune, sometimes a blues tune, sometimes bluegrass or swing. Our music is kinda like Colorado weather, just wait five minutes and it will change.
For more detailed info you can check out our website at http://www.perpetual-motion.net/. We love to play for any event, so if you'd like some live music, send us a message. You can download our tunes at iTunes, or click on the buttons below to get one of our CDs. We also have t-shirts with the "String Theory" cover and the Perpetual Motion logo available, just ask!

Surfing On Cloud Nine
1997
Surfing On Cloud Nine is an appropriate title for Perpetual Motion's second album. From the opening chords of the energetic title track to the driving swing of the final cut, all of the songs show off the band's zest for life. Their compositions are an eclectic blend of a wide variety of musical influences. There is something for every musical taste on this album.

Ready, Willing and Able

Ready, Willing, and Able aptly describes Perpetual Motion's eager, energetic approach to their rather unconventional style of music. The violin and guitar duo's debut album showcases their wide variety of musical influences of jazz, classical, rock, folk and bluegrass.

We are excited to announce that Tom's composition, "Por Causa de Voce`", has won Honorable Mention in the Unisong International Songwriting Contest! The Unisong International Songwriting Contest is the first songwriting contest of its kind, starting in 1997. Entries from over 90 countries came in this year, and Tom was in the top 15%! We have never entered a song writing contest like this, so it's very exciting to receive Honorable Mention with our first shot! Yeah Tom!

Influences: Tropical vacations, people we meet, nature, animals, our pets. Any music I happen to be listening to. We find inspiration in all sorts of places.
We write only instrumental music, and without lyrics it's not always evident what the inspiration for the music was. On the lyrics page for each song I've written what the song is about. Check it out and let us know what you think!
Sounds Like: I've actually polled our mailing list for the answer to this question and everyone says "yourselves." Everyone hears something different, but to me there's Michael Hedges, Lawrence Juber, Al Stewart, Queen, and the Beatles in Tom's guitar playing and composing, and Stephane Grapelli, Frank Zappa, and Jean-Luc Ponty, Regina Carter and Willie and Lobo in my playing. There's undoubtably a classical influence in there as well.
