Refraction EP | Chamberlain
love-music-good
Rarely has a song captured my attention like 'Should Know Better', the first track on kiwi band Chamberlain's Refraction EP. It begins with a monster riff cribbed from Stevie Wonder. To be sure, this is a song built around a riff rather than the other way around, but it still rocks harder than Mr Wonder ever could.
'Say What You Need' displays Chamberlain's songwriting skill better. It shifts from a raw and pounding verse into a lush and melodic chorus. When the chiming guitars kick in, it's a 'shivers-down-the-spine' moment.
There is a muscular funk groove that runs through this EP and helps Chamberlain avoid sounding like an everday rock band. Their style is a memorable one. If there is criticism to be had, it is that occasionally Chamberlain wear their influences a little too obviously on their collective sleeves. The first verse of 'New Day' is a too close to Incubus's 'Wish You Were Here' for comfort. And while we're going for it, the drumming is a bit busy for my taste at times also. But perhaps I am just projecting my frustration at having played with many overly busy drummers over the years.
Yet this is a minor quibble. For a debut release, the Refraction EP is actually startlingly original. Chamberlain arrive with a sound that is fully formed, unique and will undoubtedly get your feet moving. Ben Kendrew's vocals complement the band nicely; particularly on the last track 'Bring Me In'. His melodies are interesting and catchy; quite an achievement.
It would be a cliche to say that the Refraction EP points to a bright future for Chamberlain. In reality, Chamberlain play and sound like that bright future has already arrived. Now it's time for the rest of the world to catch up.
