“Compass is a band that loves Jesus Christ and wants to use their songs to praise Him.†says Jon Kristoffer Hansen of the Norwegian band. The band was formed just over two years ago and consists of Bjørn Thomas Braarvig leadsinger and acoustic guitar, Jon Kristoffer Hansen on drums, Knut-Inge Hvesser on Bass and backing vocals, Joachim Ruud on Electric-guitar and Martin Beck also on Electric-guitar. All of them have the same vision and the same heart: to serve God and since their first band practising God has been the center of it all.
Bjørn Thomas or better known to his friends as BT wrote his first song at the age of 14. BT comes from a musical family, indeed the whole family are involved in various music projects within their local churches. Jon started to play the drums when he was 15 years old. He became a christian at the age of 16 and according to him that was the best thing that ever happened to him. At age 14 Joachim started to play the electric guitar after his brother showed him a Pink Floyd concert on dvd. The first guitar he bought was a Fender stratcaster and he still uses it on tour. Knut grew up with the music. When he was just a little baby his parents would just put on music or sing for him to keep him quiet. In his first church he played guitar and tambourine and in the sixth grade he started to play in a schoolband. He wanted to play the electric guitar but that one was already taken so he got the bass. He stuck with it ever since. Martin was about 6 years old when his parents bought a guitar. His two older brothers first tried to play the guitar and as the youngest he followed. Both of his brothers quit after a while but Martin stuck with it. There was something with the music that caught him and he thought it was amazing to learn the songs he listened to.
The guys have exchanged fulltime jobs for the music ministry, they are facing the great unknown, but God is with them. BT says “We hold dear to our hearts the song Downhere wrote ’Little is much when God is it’. We believe He has the perfect plan and sees the end of the race that has been set before us. We give our all just as our song says, because He gave His all for us.†This leap of faith has been rewarded. Compass is becoming one of Norway’s most talked about Christian music bands, attracting top U.S. talents to their cause. Award-winning recording artist and songwriter Jason Germain (Downhere) is going produce their first album.
Not only that but acclaim is building quickly for the band. Endless requests for concerts are coming in through their myspace page. People are seeing five young guys with hearts to glorify and lift up the name of Jesus. The band hopes that through their songs people experience God in a new way and get inspired to draw close to Him.
BT: “The most important thing for us all is to serve God! With our talents and with our lifes and live close to Him! He’s our resource! We need Him everyday, every second and to show people his love on earth! We dont want to live our life for ourselves! All we have is God, we want Him to use us in HIS way, and in HIS plans whatever it is! His will be done on earth!.â€
