Video Underground seeks to offer an alternative to the more traditional and mainstream world of Blockbuster-style video stores. We specialize in independent, cult and foreign films; we maintain a weekly updated new-release section, as well as offering a strong local and nationally-made indie film section. We are dedicated to creating a video store that reflects the Jamaica Plain community and are very receptive to customer requests! If you are looking for a particular title or genre, please tell us and we will do our best to fulfill your request if the title is available.
Our shop is not organized like your average video store: our sections span far beyond the average confines of DRAMA and COMEDY. At Video Underground , you will find categories like the perennial favorites DRUGS & BOOZE and SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIRT, as well as MEDIA MELTDOWN, COMICS & SUPERHEROS, DOGME FILMS, CANNES/SUNDANCE, COPS & CRIMINALS, POLITICAL and AS SEEN ON TV just to name a few.
The Video Underground was created to provide the Boston area with a true selection of independent film. Beyond weekly updated new release titles, Video Underground makes a concerted effort to stock titles not found in mainstream video stores. Researching films to add to our collection is a daily part of how the store operates and sets us apart from our competition. We also believe that the customer should have a curatorial voice in the store; through the establishment of our Customer Request section, customers tell us what they want to watch and if a title is available, we do our best to bring it into the store.
We also offer local artists the unique opportunity to put their work up on our shelves for rental! If you are a filmmaker interested in making your project available for rent, please email for more info. A selection of both local and national indie films that have been featured at past Underground Film Revolution screenings are also available for rental.
We offer both VHS and DVD movies for rental and sale, and will gladly special order any title currently available at no extra charge. Please call us or come in to talk to a staff member about your orders!
