“Singing is my truest way to express all that I am and all that I feel” Marianne SolivanJazz came to vocalist Marianne Solivan when she was 18 years old. After years of study in the musical theater and classical genres she found herself being pulled to the improvisation and swing of Jazz. This connection to the music and to the creativity it demands in its makers is what inspired Marianne to focus her singing on Jazz, and has lead her to study at two of the best music schools in the country, Berklee College of Music for her undergraduate dual major in Music Education and Performance and the New England Conservatory of Music for a Masters in Jazz Studies.Throughout her time in Boston Marianne was a regular in the Jazz scene performing consistently in every different type of venue. Her passion for the music also led her to become a Jazz Activist and along with saxophonist Dan Blake they start the Boston Jazz Collective to support and unite the scattered Jazz scene. As the BJC grew a new larger group was formed and the BJC closed only to be part of the new Jazz Boston non-profit organization (www.jazzboston.org). As a board member of Jazz Boston Marianne was an integral part of creating a comprehensive website and putting together Boston’s Jazz Week ’07.Marianne maintained a busy performance schedule working throughout Boston, Rhode Island, and New York and in the fall of 2007 she made the move to New York permanent. A new band and a new sound accented the move to New York for Marianne.“Intimacy is very important to me in music, and this new band lets me get inside of a song in this way.” M SWorking with guitarist Eric Hofbauer and drummer Mike Conners this new band has energy and space and brings new life to songs from every genre. They will be releasing a new record in January ‘08 on the Creative Nation Music label.Marianne’s passionate energy and ability to make a song new with amazing phrasing and depth is why show is considered one of the best jazz singers around. You will hear old and new songs all performed in a unique and modern way that brings together a strong understanding of the Jazz vocal tradition and modern improvisation.
