I am here for Friends and Networking

About Me

I write. I've been drawn to the written word since grade school. Since then, I've written in a variety of different mediums and genres, and these days, I've settled nicely into the realm of 'speculative fiction.' Typically, my fiction writing takes me into places of horror and dark fantasy. In addition to writing fiction, I also have written features and columns for a number of online publications. Currently, I am a columnist for Paperback Reader , and a quick Google Search may bring up listings for the work I've done for REwindVideo.com and Geek in the City. In 2006, I was a staff reviewer for RPGNow.com , and in 2008, I'll be launching - along with A.C. Hall and Tony Laplume - Dead Letter Quarterly , a literary magazine (whose submission guidelines can be found here . (It should go without saying that since I write, I also read quite a bit within the genres I find myself writing, but I also try to branch out every once and a while as good writing is good writing, regardless of genre.) I currently have several short stories in varying stages of completion, and the end of 2007 will see my sitting down and throwing some words down on a dark fantasy (non-NaNoWriMo) novel. (I did participate in, and "win" 2006's National Novel Writing Month, and anticipate participating again this year.)
I make movies. In junior high school, I first picked up a video camera, and I've been hooked since. Sure, there have been some stretches of time when I wasn't working on a video project, but I seem to always end up back behind a camera, burning tape and getting my hands bloody. In 1999, I won the REwind Movie Award for my short zombie movie Cash Only, and in 2003, my short movie Casonetto's Last Song was an official selection of the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival . Moving into late 2007 and early 2008, I will get behind the camera again. (And, as stated above regarding my writing and reading, I also watch quite a few movies. My tastes typically land me solidly in the horror camp when it comes to film, and I like a good fantasy or science fiction film . . . when they come along. That said, I don't turn my nose up at non-genre fair; one of my favorite films in Double Indemnity!)
I read comics. Comics have been a regular part of my life since junior high school. Three-quarters of the comics I pick up on a monthly basis are from the mainstream publishers (mostly DC titles), but I also try to check out a number of non-mainstream books (Boneyard is hand's down my favorite book PERIOD). As a writer - see above - I've always tried my hand at writing comic scripts, and in 2008, I will have at least one finished script under my belt. (Finding an artist for that script may require a different set of expectations.)
This is not all I do; obviously there are other hobbies and habits that form who I am, and certainly I'll touch on those facets of my personality from time to time here at my MySpace page (those of you who prefer LiveJournal can find my crossposting my blog over there ).

My Interests

Writing, Role-Playing Games, Horror Movies, Zombies, Special Make-Up Effects, H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard

I'd like to meet:

There are a number of people that I would like or would have liked to meet at least once. Unfortunately, some of these people are no longer with us, which definitely does make meeting them a little more difficult I suppose, but I'll list them here nonetheless. In no particular order: Robert E. Howard, Peter Cushing, Tom Savini, Goerge R.R. Martin, H.P. Lovecraft, Bob Burns, George Romero, Beau Smith, Stephen King, Mick Farren, George Perez, Sean Astin, Graeme Revell, Fred Dekker, Geoff Johns, Bela Lugosi, the TAPS crew, Douglas Clegg, John Carpenter

Music:

When I listen to music, more often than not, I'm listening to movie scores. Graeme Revell is my favorite composer, but my movie score collection is quite eclectic, and scanning through my iPod, you'll find composers like John Williams, Ronald Stein, Elmer Bernstein, Basil Poledouris, John Carpenter, Johnathan Elias, Alan Howarth, J. Peter Robinson, etc., etc., etc.

Movies:

Prince of Darkness, Night of the Living Dead (I actually like both versions), Dawn of the Dead (NOT the remake), Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, The Creature From the Black Lagoon, Double Indemnity, F/X, The Evil Dead, Hellraiser, Back to the Future, Conan the Barbarian, The Horror of Dracula, The Curse of Frankenstein, The Monster Squad

Television:

I find myself watching much too much television these days!

Books:

The Last Stand of the DNA Cowboys by Mick Farren, A Song of Fire and Ice (series) by George R. R. Martin, The Prydain Chronicles (series) by Lloyd Alexander, Vampire$ by John Steakley, The Belgariad (series) by David (and Leigh) Eddings, You Come When I Call You by Douglas Clegg, and it's not a book, but I also really enjoy the magazine Dark Discoveries
