In the beginning of the Hip Hop era, Calvin worked in and around New York City as a session bass player, multi-Instrumentalist and programmer.
Working with ground-breaking Hip Hop legends such as Mc Lyte, UtraMagnetic Mcs, Stesasonics, Salt & Peppa, Audio Two and a host of other rappers and musicians in and throughout the Tri-state area. While honing his crafts to become a high profile artist; Calvins unique style of production work and love of various musical genres made him realize that producing would be more rewarding to him so, he ditched the idea of becoming an Artist and started to work and live in various studios in Manhattan working with established producers learning the art of engineering inside and out.
It didnt take long for Calvins artistry to catch the ear of major record labels and powerful producers. Deal negotiating was more like banking and had nothing to do with the aesthetic of the artistry side of the business but, after sitting in on a couple of major contract deals and working with some of the most celebrated and talented artist including; Whitney Houston, Brandy, Tatiana Ali, Gloria Gaynor, Patti Austin, Michael Moog, Roland Clark and countless other musicians and vocalist; Calvin soon caught on to the Business side of music. Since then Calvin has won artistic awards for producing albums for his brother Reg E. Gaines; Tony Nominated playwright and poet; co-writing the ground breaking multi-platinum single NO, NO, NO for the Grammy award winning group Destinys Child and has collaborated, wrote and produced five more singles for the group as well. His writings have also blessed R&B crooner Joe (Some Bodies Got to Be On top), which was also a multi-platinum Selling album.
In the year 2000 Calvin received a Grammy for writing and producing Its Alright To Be Wrong on the legendary Temptations. Calvins work can also be seen on the credits of major box office movies such as The Best Man, Rush Hour and the Master Of Disguise. Calvin along with partner Bruce Buchanan they continue to develop and mentor dedicated, talented and determined individuals interested in making music their career.
