Mrs. Hope NewhouseToday I saw the last breaths of a once vibrant and loving woman. She is still those things, but just buried beneath the thick layers of an aged body. There today with her daughters and husband, my sister and I chatted and tried to ignore the fact that this now small and frail woman was probably fighting for her life. In the few short minutes following, a lull fell over this small coterie, and a shudder came from the hopital bed. Mrs. Newhouse was excising the chocking masses of liquid from her lungs. It was horrible to see, hear and even smell. But, I felt for the second time in my life, Death. At first, momentarily, I felt very uncomfortable and even scared, and a dew formed on my brow. Then the rivers were let loose. We all nearly at once began to cry openly. It was almost netherworldly. Here i am with this small group of people of which my only relationship was tied through their: mother, wife, aunt--and spending time at her house in christmas, singing carols with the once vivacious Mrs. Newhouse. I myself started to sweat profusely and felt a huge tightening in my throat. Today, I celebrate the life of Mrs. Hope Newhouse, be it a great or small amount that is left. It calmed me for a moment to think that wow I am just me, at this point in time and I am momentarily very alive. Is it gaurranteed? No, not at all. Is it something I hope for, yes. I am not having some great epiphanous moment but it is something to ponder, and to realize the frail object we call life, and how quickly Death can jolt us out of the balmy monotonous thing we call life.Oskar
