About Me

Mission: K Space Art Studios is an artist-operated, 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to promoting contemporary art. As a forum for creative exchange and experimentation, K Space aspires to educate, build and nurture an audience for innovative art in the Coastal Bend.K Space is the only alternative, non-profit art space in Corpus Christi. K Space provides a forum for emerging and under-represented artists who wish to express modern concerns in new ways. Our highest goal is to provide a venue for art seekers to view contemporary work in the Coastal Bend.Board of Directors: K Space Directors are experienced, enthusiastic, and committed. Several of our Board members have experience working with non-profit organizations, some with start-up organizations. Our Board’s first task is to oversee fundraising for renovation of the new space and future operational costs. 2006-2007 Executive Committee: President: John Watson, Secretary: Eric Rivera, Treasurer: Ashley Thomas, and Judy Curiel, Gerald Lopez, Joe Pena, Day Wheeler.K Space Art Studios was established in November 1995 by founders Erick and Raychelle Schaudies when they discovered the old Kress building in downtown Corpus Christi as potential studio space. They petitioned other artists to join them, and with the help of five charter members, they cleared and divided the 7,000 square foot warehouse into 12 studios, a darkroom, and common area. What they created is now a thriving workspace housing 12 to 18 artists. The name “K Space” connects to the building’s historic roots as the Kress Five & Dime Store built in 1917. The studios occupy the entire third floor. K Space has gained growing recognition in the community through its annual Open Houses, exhibitions, and feature news articles. Exhibitions include works of art by local and regional artists, an annual national juried competition, and experiments in performance and installation art. Exhibitions are chosen from proposals submitted by artists and curators. In 2003, K Space began an annual national competition and exhibition which became international in 2006. This show draws approximately 500 people to the opening reception. We intend to continue the national juried show as well as include additional regional competitions.Recently, K Space Art Studios received its 501©3 tax exempt designation and is now embarking on an important cultural project. K Space is preparing to open a new space, which will be called the K Space Contemporary. We are in the fundraising stages now.Erick and Raychelle Schaudies managed the K Space Art Studios and Gallery until transferring to Austin in the summer of 1999. Michelle Smythe took over as Director and continues to pursue the vision set forth by the Schaudies’.
