In 1934, when I was five years old, our family moved east to Greenwich, Connecticut in 1936, from Chicago, IL. Dad bought a three-story, thirty one room English country manor house on Lake Avenue.
I was educated at Greenwich Academy, and Convent of the Sacred Heart. In September 1945, I began my education at Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart. It was here that I was introduced to Jean Kennedy, and we became fast friends and eventually roommates. She was a fabulous girl.
Through Jean I met my husband Bobby, who ironically was dating my sister Patricia at the time, during a skiing trip. I campaigned for Bobby's brother Jack in 1946, and even wrote my college thesis on his book 'Why England Slept' (I got an A). Bobby and I became engaged in February 1950 and married on June 17, 1950. Our first child arrived shortly thereafter.
In October 1955 my parents died tragically when their old corvair plane ran out of fuel. My brother George also died in a plane crash in 1966, and his widow Pat died shortly thereafter, leaving several children.
I'm the founder of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Centre which attempts to continue the works of my husband through Human Rights Awards and Journalism Awards. I also chair the Coalition of Gun Control (I used to be co-chair with Coretta Scott King, but she recently passed away. I'm also involved with other human rights organizations, such as inviting orphaned children into my home and holding luncheons for Women Shelter victims.
